Yes it is good he is stepping down but who is he going to put in power behind him. His brother comes to mind when I first heard he is stepping down. I think the people of Cuba need to work on getting the Castros out of Cuba for good.

Even if the Castros are out of Cuba, there are probably hundreds with the same thinking, nothing will be really be accomplished.

Many are saying that Raul's rule will allow Cuba to return to a Democracy and religion to reenter her borders. We will have to wait and see.

With regards to Castro, he planned it well, he wanted to go out on his terms and not the world telling him he should through media hype. Just when they thought he would die as the Cuban leader he resigns - interesting strategy.

Actually, Raul has mentioned a Socialism that has more input from the people, not exactly Democracy, but it does certainly sound as though it is a improvement. Fidel actually started to have religion enter Cuba with the Pope's visit and it seems as he is getting closer and closer to death himself has unofficially relaxed the rules on religion within Cuba.

Raul seems to be more of a pragmatic individual as opposed to the charasmatic Fidel. I see a guy that probably wants a more efficient and profitable Cuba for all its people. However, I never can forget that he was basically in charge of the military and it would be foolish to force him to do anything. Cuba likely will become a bit more moderate...but at Raul's pace.

Maybe now that US law of allowing Cubans who land in the States illegally to get 'free' residency will change.

One thing you have to give Castro is this - he stood up to the USA for decades in his little island, he even withstood an invasion. I think Castor embarrassed the US many times over.

I actually doubt that there will be any significant change in laws regarding Cuba from the US. Not until there is significant improvements on Cuba's side... I guarantee that the US will continue to accept those that successfully land on its shore. If there is another emptying of the jails in Havana, then the Coast Guard will stop them at sea before they even reach US shores. While we did get some criminals (which was clever on Castro's part) we did get a lot of good hard working Cubans that have contributed greatly to America and are proud to call this their home.

Castro has caused a lot of grief for the US. The constant anti-US rhetoric always plays well, quelled the Bay of Pigs effort, emptied his jails and put them in boats headed to the US, befriended and actively turned many governments over to a socialist/communist rule in Latin America, stole over a billion USD by seizing assets from US companys after his revolution and avoided more than a couple of assasignation attempts. He did pay a price to be the thorn though... Lost his foothold in Grenada, forced to get nukes out of his country in a who blinks first show down (actually Russia vs US showdown fought in his country...hometeam lost), tourism (Havana was a favorite holiday location prior to the revolution...so was Beruit) dollars that are countless over nearly 50 years and who can forget Guantanimo Bay. Castro still has to be kicking hismelf for cashing that check...

Forgot to mention GWB's poking at Castro. The installation of a message ticker on the 5th floor of the Embassy in Havana has provide for some fun that the Cuban government had to spent a dollar or two to try and block.
