There is a large Asian community from the Chinese ancestors working on the railroads. When people think of California, they think of Los Angeles and Hollywood, where stars are made. That's what I think of as well first.

Storm, less severe than advertised, still brings snow and hail

The record low temperatures forecast for San Diego never materialized, but the weekend storm didn't disappoint fans of snow and hail - or the mountain resort towns that welcome them. Backcountry merchants were bracing for an onslaught of business today as road conditions improve and temperatures climb closer to normal. Ref. Source 5

The Official Outdoor Play of the State of California is "Ramona." From Wikipedia:

international QUOTE
The Ramona Outdoor Play, formerly known as (and still commonly called) the Ramona Pageant is an outdoor play staged annually at Hemet, California since 1923. The script is adapted from the 1884 novel Ramona by Helen Hunt Jackson. It is held over three consecutive weekends in April and May in the Ramona Bowl, a natural amphitheater in the foothills above Hemet in Riverside County. The production features cast of more than 300, made up largely of local residents and amateur actors. In the past such professional actors as Raquel Welch, Anne Archer, Jeffrey Meek, Henry Brandon and Maurice Jara have portrayed the romantic leading roles of Ramona and her Indian lover Alessandro. The production is often described as the largest and longest-running outdoor play in the United States.
The Ramona Pageant is the official outdoor play of the State of California.[1]

I've attended once before, about 4 years ago, and I'm taking my mom and my daughter again on May 7. Very exciting! The amphitheater is so big they have hills and valleys, real horses, a hacienda, etc. It's something like 160 acres of land.

The beautiful hispanic Ramona falls in love with handsome Native-American Allessandro, but it's much more than a love story.

Despite the problems, San Diegans like California

Despite a tough economy and job market, most San Diegans think California is a fine place to live. They also tend to have a better view of California than the statewide average. One out of three San Diegans rate California as "excellent," compared to one out of four Californians. Ref. Source 4

Calif. Lawmakers close deficit on rosy projections

Exercising their new majority-vote authority, California Democrats on Tuesday closed the remainder of what had been a gaping budget deficit by relying on a combination of deep spending cuts, optimistic revenue projections and new fees that are sure to be challenged in court. Ref. Source 9

California crushes small businesses with tax hike

The Governor called it a 'common sense' move -- maybe to a Hollywood liberal, but to everyone else? Not so much. Amazon.com immediately ended their arrangement with 25,000 California websites - which surely will help business in the state. Ref. Source 6

I think that's all kind of ridiculous. It's sales tax, which California businesses*all* have to collect and pay. The customer pays it, not the business. And he doesn't mention that the sales tax rate is dropping 1% effective on July 1.
Source 3

What is annoying is that consumers and businesses also have to pay what California calls "Use Tax" - if we buy anything from out of state or on the Internet and don't pay California sales tax, Cali wants to collect it anyway by imposing the same rate of tax because we will "use" the product in Cali. We are supposed to pay this voluntarily. But since most people don't, the state is enforcing this on businesses by requiring them to file a Use Tax Return every year and report their purchases and pay the tax. Ridiculous.
