Eavesdropping History & Civil Business Politics

What I want to know is this... what are they surprised about? If civilian companies can make weapons for military use then why can't civilian companies also be tapped to track usage for 'terrorism', etc.

Three Major Telecom Companies Help US Government Spy on Millions of Americans

USA Today has revealed the National Security Agency is secretly collecting the phone call records of millions of Americans with the help of AT&T, Verizon and BellSouth. For the customers of these companies, it means that the government has detailed records of calls they made to family members, co-workers, business contacts and others. One source told the paper that the NSA is attempting to create the world's largest database -- big enough to include every call ever made within the nation's borders.

Eavesdropping
A Friend

Page 2 Eavesdropping

The reason people are surprised is that until the last few year apparently, this information had to be obtained via warrant. The warrant could only be obtain by showing probable cause that a crime was committed involving a specific person to be tapped. Now, in the last year, we have found out that under the guise of keeping us safe, they can tap our phones and collect phone records. Not some phone records, not records of known criminals or terrorists, ALL phone records from ANY US citizen. Selling and building weapons for the government is not the same as them violating our privacy, not by along shot. Again though, people don't see how this can effect a law abiding citizen. So let me put this Presidentially mandated eaves dropping program into the future, say ten years. Everyone is used to the law by then, and protests have died down. One day, your friendly neighbor, out spoken against the government, disappears. Why? Because speaking out against the government is seen as domestic terrorism because it causes strife in a country already dealing with terrorism and war. No one knows what happens to him because under the patriot act, he doesn't have to be charged. But all the information they needed was obtained through telephone and internet eaves dropping. Performed in kind by the NSA and the CIA which is now run by an ex-military general who views US citizens not as citizens, but possible domestic terrorists. Thats why this is so dangerous. If you think it won't happen, remember back in the sixties when no one ever thought whats happening now could happen. It is the natural progress of power, absolute power corrupts absolutely, and if this power is not checked, then we will suffer the consequences of a totalitarian government and we will no longer be allowed to have this discussion.

Eavesdropping

What a wonder. A judge who is overwhelmingly liberal, appointed by Jimmy Carter, rules against the administration of George W. Bush.

See, the problem is, this is one of the tools that was used extensively to find and stop the terrorist plot coming out of England. It was used to find terrorist cells located here in the US.

So, we will now throw away ANOTHER proven tool against the terrorists.

Thanks a lot, Judge.

He is absolutely right. The activist judge, the whining and moaning Democrats, the hyper-sensitive ACLU. All of them ignore the fact that there are "radical" Islamofascists out there trying their hardest to kill US citizens.

Last week, a whole bunch of people in Britain were gathered up, with very strong evidence that they were planning on blowing up lots of airplanes. The US "eavesdropping" program was what gave the investigators the intel that the plan was being implemented right away.

If Judge Taylor had ruled a week earlier, and the NSA had actually stopped their actions, it is entirely possible that the plan would have gone through. Terrorism experts have estimated that as many as 4000 people could have been killed.

Do you feel more, or less safe now that Judge Taylor has ruled this way?

Oh, yes. Most legal analysts are sure that her ruling will be overturned, as none of the plaintiffs in this case had any legal standing to bring the suit in the first place.

Here is a very interesting commentary on the ruling.
