The U.S. Senate signaled strong support in a vote for a bipartisan proposal to strengthen border security, giving a boost to prospects for passage of sweeping immigration legislation.

The 67-27 vote was considered a key test of support for the bill as a whole, as the measure also includes language echoing most other parts of the legislation.

Backers of the bill were hoping to demonstrate growing bipartisan momentum for the larger proposal as it nears final passage in the Democratic-controlled Senate and heads to the GOP-controlled House of Representatives. Ref. CNN

DHS to boost security at federal government buildings

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said Tuesday that security would be enhanced at some federal buildings in Washington and other cities. The announcement comes a week after a man in Ottawa gunned down a soldier and stormed Canada's Parliament. "Given world events, prudence dictates a heightened vigilance in the protection of U.S. Government installations and our personnel," Johnson said in a statement. Ref. USAToday
