Chikungunya Virus in Trinidad & Tobago

The Chikungunya Virus is spreading across the Caribbean. The symptoms are similar to dengue but can have more long lasting effects in joints and bones of victims. There is no cure for the Chikungunya Virus. According to the Ministry of Health the Chikungunya Virus has not invaded Trinidad & Tobago as yet.

We do not need this virus in this country. From what I read, it seems worse than Dengue Fever! Everyone needs to be extra vigilant and keep their surroundings clean and cover all containers filled with water. I am very scared for everyone where this virus is concerned!

The Ministry of Health confirmed that there are three new cases of the Chikungunya Virus in Trinidad and they are all from visitors bringing the virus here. Beware of mosquitoes that carry the virus - make sure to put on repellent.

There are 20 confirmed cases of the Chikungunya Virus in the Belmont area and many residents claim that there are many mosquitoes due to the bush that surrounds them on the mountain. Victims of the virus say that the worst of it lasts for about a week but even after the virus has left the joints of the body continue to hurt.

Chikungunya Virus In Trinidad & Tobago

According to TV6 there almost 40 cases of the Chikungunya virus bringing people in the Belmont to their sick beds. Many schools in the Belmont area are also concerned that mosquitoes seem immune to spraying and are biting the students when they attend school.

Why Belmont and not other places in Trinidad? Other areas have bush and places that mosquitoes can breed but you don't hear about these cases so why Belmont?

Dr. Chadee, a professor at the University of the West Indies, says that the spread of the Chikungunya Virus in Trinidad and Tobago is much bigger than is being publicized largely because the breeding patterns of the mosquitoes (Carriers) are being catered for by poor practices of the public.
