Title: Heading into the Abyss

Comments: The impression given here by those governing this nation and those in positions of authority is that they are all bunkers. My suggestion a few months ago that the government should start building prisons and an asylum to house themselves still stands. Here were have an important public figure suggesting that school children be given condoms, and that this will deter them from having sex in schools. Then we have the Acting Commissioner of police calling on citizens to start praying in order to solve our crime problem. Then we have the most notorious criminal on this island showing no signs of gratification from the politicians for sparing his life after attempting a coup in1990 but now suing the government for millions. He was also allowed without any hindrance to form and lead a so-called Muslim movement which has now producing terrorists by the dozens and is still leading a movement that remains a threat to our democracy. In addition to this, we have a world renowned mastermind of corrupting running around free on this island who is wanted by the FBI to answer charges on alleged corruption whilst serving in an important position in FIFA, which he denies but won't face a court to prove his innocence. Most damaging of all we are now heading the list of murders worldwide, have a police force which is disliked and not trusted by our citizens. And a obviously corrupt justice system. Yes and with all these adverse occurrences on this piece of land measuring 60x 40 miles with a population of 1.4 million with elected representatives calling themselves politicians but doing absolutely nothing to stem the flow of murders, serious crimes, kidnappings, and widespread galloping lawlessness. Looks to me like the country is operating on the lines of the Mafia type administration, and are certainly heading head first into the abyss eh.

Title: Crime in Trinidad

Comments: It is so very easy to point fingers at others and blame others for one's failures. Granted, there needs to be in place some structures around us to promote a morally progressive society. However, a large percentage of our views, values, beliefs, references come from our immediate surrounding. (Our home, our family, our relatives, our friends). In order to start reversing this downward trend on which we have embarked, each of us need to re- access what we want from life, what we want for our children, what we expect from our leaders, our clergy, our neighbours.
The basic principles of respect, love, contentment, peace, harmony, sharing, kindness- they have been replaced when we allowed ourselves to be lured into a highly competitive and selfish world.
The 'genie' is now outside the bottle. Unless we need to do some soul searching and stop pointing fingers. We have been pointing fingers and expecting others to do the 'lifting' for us. Perhaps we need to start 'lifting' our own load.

Comments: Whilst I agree with most of what Mr Aston has said, he has apparently failed the understand that the good starting point of morals, self discipline, respect for the police, politicians and many in positions of authority here as a guide to our children or even those parents who were born after our independence have been eroded by the bad examples set by most of those who has and are still governing this nation. How on earth will we ever get back to some form of normally God knows.with such eradication of old tried and tested established guidelines.
The finger has to be pointed to some one or group of responsible citizens for our present internal predicament. This does not only relate to our crime scenario, in includes the attitudes to personal greed for wealth, general lawlessness, corruption, poverty, disrespect for the elderly, the police and the growing belief by our younger generation that crime pays here.
The long and short of it is that our mentors, elected representatives and those holding responsible official position here are quite prepared to sit back, offer meaningless lip service, but do nothing constructive or worthwhile to improve the situation.
They are quite prepared to take the easy way out despite the fact it will make matters worse. In fact some of their ideas of fixing what is wrong seems to me most bazaar, and could be considered as crazy and taking a backward step.. For instance the suggestion of handing out condoms to school children and offering prayer to God to resolve our crime situation together with the now embedded and accepted idea and habit of most of our senior politicians who feather their nest, by milking the Treasury funds.
