'Don't put anything heavy there'

SINKHOLES, lead, manganese, gas, asbestos, arsenic, pesticides, paint thinner, oil. Your backyard could be a cesspool of industrial poison and danger and you wouldn't even know it. Ref. Source 8

Dumping chemicals anywhere is hazardous, if you choose your your own backyard then something is not right with you, sorry to say.

Maybe not directly related but pouring chemicals down your drain or in the yard's drains can also cause lots of problems not only for your own family's health but your neighborhood's as well. Even more true if you live in the suburbs where there might not be heavy duty drainage built.

A good reason why this is also a bad idea is if you live in an area that is prone to flooding. The waters soak up the chemicals from your place and take it to other places.

Well us country folk have shed were we wash out brushes after painting and dump the gas with the paint in the gravel. Guess what the paint and gas likely have lead back when I was young but that's ok as we washed the paint off our hands in it as well.

So no it was often not purposely a toxic dumping so much as being unaware for years ands slowly pilling up toxic waste. Often roads were oiled to keep down the dust and it got rid of old motor oil as well. Ignorance was bliss but now we know more and as such remember people back 50 years OFTEN USED BACK YARDS AS WASTE DISPOSAL.

As we learn more and more what is hazardous to us and our lives we need to remember that there are places where one can take the chemicals so the can be safely disposed of. If you are in a place where there is no place to take the chemicals then maybe a good strong storage place could be the answer until you can find or ship them to a place that can handle the items.

I would refrain putting anything down the drain or dumped in your yard now a days unless you know it is safe and biodegradable.
