Distant Family Genealogy

Do you think its worth going after distant family when doing genealogy research or do you think its better just staying with the main lines through patriarchs or matriarchs?

I always stick with the main line at first but if I cannot go any further back then I start to look at uncles and aunts. When I get to a sticking point there then I look for cousins. That's my order of priority for genealogy work.
