Female Dungeon Master

One of the female members on this site (At least their avatar is female) answered a new topic of mine saying they aren't currently a dungeon master and I was like why not? So it got me thinking… why aren't there more female dungeon masters, not just in this site but in general?

I would say this is due to the vast majority of people that play D&D in general are male. Most of the other women I've known personally that play do so due to their boyfriend playing etc. This really cuts down on the pool of women that might Dungeon Master.

So is Dungeons & Dragons a male thing and women only do it because their males are doing it? That's kind of sad because I think women are way better at role-playing than men. They think of the things we don't.

Hunter,

I don't know about way better than men! wink.gif They certainly do think of things we don't though. I bet a woman would be a kick butt Dungeon Master. But now that you mention it, I've never known one.

Beats me, I've wondered about that myself. It may just be a population thing. The ratio of men to women in this field is just abysmal.

Dungeons & Dragons is mostly a guy thing. When I play other games such as World of Darkness there are lot of other females. Those games have a much higher emphasis on the social aspect. Most games I have seen of D&D tend to be almost all combat. A lot of guys I have seen just want to roll dice and kill things. I made the mistake for a 3.5 campaign I joined of making a very social bard. Then the campaign began and I literally never got to use social skills. All campaigns aren't like this but I dare say most are. The reputation is out there so most women don't play.

I think it's a definition problem. Technically, ladies would be Dungeon Mistresses biggrin.gif

More seriously, as someone from Gen Y, I have noticed a disproportionate ratio, but not a total lack of female Dungeon Masters. Two in a university environment that supports them. One in organised play where the role gets passed around and active participation is encouraged. It seems to follow the ratio of players.
