Jady the Druid

The guard looks up as a medium sized (5' 5") female approaches the gates of the town he is guarding.

She holds out her hand, smiles and say "Hi, my name is Jady." (Out of character - pronounced as Jade.)

As the guard shakes her calloused hand, he looks at her. She looks slight but as he looks closer at her he can see the muscles under her skin built by years of hard work. Her light brown hair is pulled back in a braid which goes halfway down her back. Her green eyes sparkle at the in the sunlight. She wouldn't stand out in a crowd in such a large crowd. She looks harmless.

She tells the guard "I'm looking for the druid's glade. I have an introduction to them to continue with my training."

She hands the guard a letter who examines it for the Druid Master's seal. He sees the seal at the bottom as well as a signature from one of the travelling druid teachers with a short note as a recommendation.

Jady looks nervously over the shoulder of the guard examining her note. After the fire at her parents house, she had nowhere else to go. One of the travelling druids who had been teaching her in druidic ways for the past few years arrived at the temporary tent her mom was living in until her father returned from his latest battle. The druid saw her plight and offered to send a note with her to the druid master in the large city near them. Jady's mom knew it was the right course of action as there was nothing to keep Jady home any more. Jady hopes learning the druid skills will help to learn the underlying ways of the forest and animals. Right now she doesn't know how she wants to use this information. Her mom always told her that she could become a ruler of the lands, but is this really wants she wants to do?

"First time here, Jady." the guard asks her.

"Yes it is."

"Let me direct to a safe place for you to stay as there are some parts of the city you don't want to get into.

Jade nods her head in thanks and listens to his instructions to a local tavern. The guard bids her farewell and turns to the next person in line to get into the city.

She shoulders her pack containing a few bits of clothing and went through the gate into the city. She had eaten the last bit of her food this morning and was hoping she would find work quickly to buy her next meal.

Advisor Description

As I worked for the herbalist, I was lonely. I felt out of place with the other workers. They seemed to have a group set up for just themselves. I tried to make friends by helping other people when I was down with my work, but they rebuffed my advances each time.

One night I was walking around the city and found a church. The emblem on the building wall caught my eye as it looked like the emblem on small chapel near my mom's house.

I remembered the day I found the chapel as I wandered through the woods looking for herbs or practicing my druid skills, I cam across a small chapel sitting off of one of the lesser traveled roads. I had never seen before. The chapel exuded peace and light.

I walked up to the chapel door. A man was coming out the door. He was in a simple robe and cloak with symbol hanging from a chain around his neck.

"Welcome, young lady. What brings you to my small chapel?" he asked me.

"I saw it as I was gathering plants. It is off the main road."

"The founders set it off of the road for peace and contemplation. I find it suits me for this time in my life."

We talked for a while and I returned home. I asked my mother about the chapel. She mentioned she had stopped by the chapel a few times to speak to the cleric about having me study with him. She encouraged me to stop by and study with him, which I did.

After remembering the hours I spent in the chapel at home, I stepped through the open door and sat down in a seat. I took a deep breath and prayed to the forest gods and goddesses I worshipped. There were many of them, so I prayed for a long time. When I finished, I felt like I could return to the herbalist district and continue my work.

Over the next week, I returned to the church almost every night. One night I saw a cleric straightening up the chapel and approached him.

"Father, may I speak with you?"

I must have startled him as he jumped at my works, "My child, I didn't realize you completed your prayers. How may I help you?"

I stumbled over my words, "I, I studied for a while under Father Eric near my home village of Stubaker. I was hoping I could continue my studies into healing and the gods hear if someone was willing to teach me. I don't have much money, but I'm willing to work for my studies."

He motioned to a seat, "Come sit down and let's talk."

Over the next hour he carefully quizzed me over what I had learned under Father Eric. He seemed pleased with how much I knew. He provided me with a book to study from and told me to come back after I had read the first two chapters. Two days later I returned to talk with him. Over the month I spent at the herbalist yard Cleric Ansel and I spent many evening hours talking over my studies. I learned so much from him. I also spent many hours cleaning and working in the church or for the poor he ministered to.

Reflections on your mother

The Dream Whisper came to me last night and told me to write about my mother. My mother, I called her mom, was the only stable person I had in my life. My father had to go fight and I only saw him when he was on leave. He didn't know what to do with a daughter. I learned fighting and defensive skills from him, but didn't feel loved by him.

But my mom, she was always there. I ran to her at nights when I had bad dreams and she comforted me. If father was home, I couldn't stay in bed with her. If he wasn't home, I could lay with her and she would tell me stories of what I could become in these lands. She made sure I always had plenty to eat even in times when food was scarce. I discovered she gave me extra food when it was rationed by giving me part of her food.

She taught me at an early age how to read and do sums. She insisted that I go to school and made my father pay for the schooling. He didn't have the dreams for me that my mother had. He expected for me to get married. She had greater plans for me.

As I grew into my teens, I started to take to the woods to hike and wander. She was so worried about me being by myself in the woods that she banned me from going out without someone going with me. I couldn't find someone to go with me all the times I wanted to, so I sneaked out. She caught me doing it and punished me by having me do manual labor on the farm. But this backfired on her as I like working with the animals and in the gardens and fields. When my father came back she discussed my disobedience. He agreed it could be dangerous in the woods if I wasn't trained to protect myself. He trained me and assigned a local guard to continue with my training. I didn't learn how to fight with a sword but he made me an iron tipped and wrapped walking stick. I became pretty good at defending myself with that stick.

Once that crisis was over, my mom and I came back together and quickly became good friends again. She was the person who saw my animal and plant skills. She contacted the local druid clan to arrange training for me. It was great as it gave me a great excuse to go out into the woods.

As I grew into my womanhood, she helped through that process. We had long talks about the type of man I should marry, if I ever decided to marry. I miss the talks we had.

When the house burned, I became the adult and took care of her. I comforted her, sent word to my father about the fire. He couldn't return, but sent money so I could get a temporary shack set up for her. Once she was situated, she insisted that I leave to come to town. Father was on his way back and could help her finish the new house. I didn't want to go, but she told me this was one more step in the destiny to become a ruler in these lands.

Dear Cleric Ansel,

Thank you for the gift. I will cherish it and equip it as soon as I arise.

I am studying the books you gave me the last time we met. I am learning much from the books, much more than I expected. As I work, I ponder and think on the words. I must warn you I have many questions to ask you the next time we study together.

The gods were watching over me when I came across your church.

I am working jobs that are way below my station and ability, but I know what my goals are and slowly I will reach them.

With warmest regards,

Jady.

Reflections on your father

My father - this is the harder one to write. He never said it aloud but I felt he was disappointed I wasn't a boy when I was born. Sometimes he frowned when he looked at me. One day I asked my mom why he did that. She wouldn't answer me at that time. I think he loved me. He wanted me to be my own person and wasn't happy with all the rules my mom put on me. At least he was the person who told my mom to let me wander the woods. And he did get me the training so I could protect myself.

I tried to make him happy, but I didn't know how to do that. He was away so much in the battles. When he came home all he wanted to do was be with my mom, to rest and check on the land we lived on. I felt like a stranger to him.

I don't think he will be happy when he comes back to find me gone.

Dear Cleric Ansel,

I've been exploring the city more and taking the odd jobs when I can. It seems to be a very slow process, but I know I must be patient in my growth.

I wonder what path the gods have for me. I know what my mother spoke to me on her plans for my life. But should those plans be my plans. I pray to the gods each day. I will try to visit you tomorrow or the next day, if you have time.

Respectfully yours,

Jady.

We didn't know Jady so well. She helped here and there in the city. She took on a task that was beyond her skills and died bravely fighting the spiders below the library. Cleric Ansel, her advisor, steps up "I knew Jady well. She had a good spirit and was brave. She had a good heart and wasn't afraid to do new activities. Please bow your heads for a few minutes to pray to your god as we bless Jady's soul."
