Rex Ryan went from the hot seat to some job security. The New York Jets signed the popular coach to a contract extension Thursday, removing the lame duck label from Ryan and keeping him with the franchise through the 2015 season - and possibly beyond. The team announced the extension for Ryan, who had one year remaining on his contract, but provided no further details regarding the length of the deal or financial terms. Browns Hire Mike Pettine After Twisting Search (Yahoo Sports)
NFL Related News

Mike Pettine knows he might not have been Cleveland's first choice or even the Browns' second pick. ''It's been my life-long dream to be an NFL head coach,'' Pettine said Thursday, ''and however that opportunity presents itself, it's fine with me.'' After nearly a month of twists, turns and talk, the Browns found their man. Buffalo's defensive coordinator, who didn't seem to be on Cleveland's radar when the team began a coaching search last month, signed a five-year contract Thursday and was named the Browns' seventh full-time coach since 1999. The Browns interviewed 10 candidates before deciding on the 47-year-old Pettine, who has built a solid reputation with a no-nonsense approach with his players.

He talked for less than 7 minutes at both media day on Tuesday and the media session at the team hotel on Wednesday. ''Real good.'' Lynch limited his answers to football-related questions, all with Seahawks fullback Michael Robinson by his side. Lynch's aversion to speaking with the media had become a major focal point as the Seahawks started their preparations for Sunday's game against Denver.

Lions Releasing Burleson Delmas (Yahoo Sports)
NFL Related News

The Detroit Lions have released wide receiver Nate Burleson and safety Louis Delmas, two starters from last season's team. Burleson spent four seasons with the Lions, but Detroit likely made this decision with financial flexibility in mind. The 32-year-old Burleson caught 39 passes for 461 yards and a touchdown last season in nine games. The Lions drafted Delmas in the second round in 2009, and he's been a consistent starter for them since then.
