Pope Benedict XVI Says Catholic Church Must Minister to Women After Abortions

The Vatican (LifeNews.com) -- Pope Benedict XVI told participants at a weekend conference that the Catholic Church has an obligation to minister to women who have been victimized by abortion. The Pope said abortion has left millions of women physically, emotionally and spiritually wounded and Catholics must reach out to them. The pontiff said abortion has "devastating consequences" for women, families and society. He called abortion a "painful decision" and fretted that "so many women have had to make [the decision] alone" and that abortion leaves an "unhealed wound they carry in their souls." He urged women who have had abortions to not feel a sense of hopelessness and despair but to open themselves to hope and healing that can come through repentance and forgiveness from God. At the same time, Pope Benedict said Catholics have an obligation to reach out to women hurting after an abortion, saying they are "looking for peace and the possibility of recovery."

Though I do not agree with everything in the Catholic Church, thank God for religious leaders who are inspired to teach correct doctrines. God uses all religions, in differing degrees for his purpose, and the greater purpose of preserving life is fulfilled in the Catholic churches proscription against Abortion.

Catholic Bishop Causes Stir: Don't Vote for Pro-Abortion Candidates, Period

Scranton, PA (LifeNews.com) -- A Catholic bishop in Pennsylvania has perhaps gone further than any other Catholic leader in the nation with a new statement saying Catholics shouldn't vote for any candidate who is pro-abortion. The statement has implications for the presidential race with a clear contrast between the candidates. Scranton Bishop Joseph F. Martino showed up unexpectedly at a parish forum in his diocese and said he was upset that the letter he authored saying not to vote for pro-abortion candidates wasn't a part of the discussion. Martino surprised the audience by saying that the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops doesn't go far enough in laying out Catholic policy vis-a-vis voting priorities. The letter indicates that abortion is more important than any other political issue. "Health care, education, economic security, immigration, and taxes are very important concerns. Neglect of any one of them has dire consequences as the recent financial crisis demonstrates," it says. "However, the solutions to problems in these areas do not usually involve a rejection of the sanctity of human life in the way that abortion does."

It is pretty simple. If you want an abortion or you want abortion to be legalized, then you cannot be Catholic. If that is that important to you, you need to find a different religion. There is one out there for you, it just is not Catholicism. Don't be upset, there have been many religions that have spun off of Catholicism. Catholicism has been around for a long time and yours and anyone elses desires to change it from its roots are in vain. That is part of the beauty of the church. Many of its beliefs go back to the times of Jesus. Catholicism will never be confused with the Church of What's Happening Now!

Vatican Rejects Abortion "Right" at United Nations, Says People a Resource

New York, NY (LifeNews.com) -- The Vatican ambassador to the United Nations told the international body on Monday that there is no international "right" to abortion. Its ambassador told UN delegates on Monday that people should be considered the world's greatest resource instead of the pro-abortion notion that there are too many. Archbishop Celestino Migliore, permanent observer of the Holy See at the United Nations, presented the position in an address on population and development at the 64th session of the U.N. General Assembly. According to a Zenit report, he said abortion advocates were wrong to conclude at the Cairo conference 15 years ago "that a population explosion was going to occur and hamper the ability to achieve adequate global economic development." Now, "we see that this perception was unfounded," he said. Zenit also indicates that Migliore observed how, in many nations, "legislators are now encouraging an increase in birth rates to assure continued economic growth" because of severe problems accompanying underpopulaton. Catholic Leader: Pray, Take Action Against Abortion During Respect Life Month

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The Catholic cardinal who is the head of the pro-life office at the United States Conference for Catholic Bishops is calling on pro-life advocates to pray and take action to stop abortion during the month of October, which is traditionally known as Respect Life month.

Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Galveston-Houston addressed direct threats to human life and called Catholics to "constantly witness to the inestimable worth and dignity of each human life through a loving concern for the good of others."

He also encouraged participation in the worldwide "Vigil for All Nascent Human Life" called for by Pope Benedict XVI at the start of Advent.

In his statement, Cardinal DiNardo noted populations particularly at risk: millions of unborn children in the womb, embryonic human beings destroyed "in the name of science," and seriously ill patients "under threat from a renewed campaign for legalizing physician-assisted suicide."

"The loss of even one child, and the pain experienced by the child's mother and father in the aftermath of abortion, should impel us to redouble our efforts to end legal abortion," Cardinal DiNardo said.

He stressed the need 'to ensure that every pregnant woman has whatever help she needs to turn away from this heartbreaking choice." Ref. Source 7

Democratic Ad: Catholic Church More Concerned About Abortion Than Poor

St. Paul, MN (LifeNews.com) -- A campaign postcard the Minnesota Democratic Party sent to voters in the Midwestern state is causing a strong reaction from pro-life advocates. It claims the Catholic Church is more concerned with abortion than helping the poor. The postcard features a large photo of a older but faceless Catholic priest holding a Bible and wearing the clearly-seen Roman Catholic collar.

The priest sports a campaign button in a red, white and blue motif with the words, "Ignore the Poor."

The ad, in the estimation of National Catholic Register writer Matt Archbold is blatantly anti-Catholic and meant to tell voters the Catholic Church is more concerned about abortion than the plight of the poor.

"Sometimes there's a little subtlety to anti-Catholic political rhetoric but not this time. This is in your face anti-Catholicism," he said. "It's anti-Catholicism is not one point of many. It's the point."

"But this postcard has nothing to do with the poor. What this is about is the fact that the Church stands strong against abortion and gay marriage. And that makes some very angry," he explained. Ref. Source 1

Pope Benedict Calls for Worldwide Prayer Against Abortion

Pope Benedict XVI has issued what Catholic pro-life advocates are calling an unprecedented request for prayers worldwide from all pro-life people against abortion.

The head of the Catholic Church will begin Advent by celebrating a solemn "Vigil for all nascent human life" at St. Peter's Basilica on Saturday, November 27.

The call is not limited to Catholics as the Pope is asking that "all Diocesan Bishops (and their equivalent) of every particular church preside in analogous celebrations involving the faithful in their respective parishes, religious communities, associations and movements."

Mary McClusky, the Special Projects Coordinator at the Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities at the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, says the call is especially important at a time when attacks on the dignity and worth of human life seem to be at an all-time high.

"At this moment in history, when societies are now endorsing the killing of humans as a perceived solution to social, economic, and environmental problems, the Holy Father is reminding us of the necessity and power of prayer to protect human life," she said. "Despite the challenge of these events being held on Thanksgiving weekend in the United States, Catholics should not miss this opportunity to pray for unborn life." Ref. Source 4
