Who is the true friend of someone on the spectrum? Do Autistic people have trouble making and keeping long lasting friendships.

Comments: I've always had a hard time making friends. Lately, someone asked me if I was autistic. I didn't know what being autistic was all about so I said "No". Googled up some sites and came up with this one. Could I be autistic because I don't have any friends?

No. There are many reasons why someone may not have friends. If you googled up autism, you should also check if there are online tests that can give you an idea of whether or not you have some characteristics of autism. Of course, ONLY a doctor diagnosis can determine that.

Sadly, people use all kinds of words to describe someone if they don't seem to fit in with everyone else. How many times have you heard someone being called, "Retarded", "Retard", "Autistic", "Dumb", etc.? Do not let it get to you. You may have friends but you don't even know it. Best way to get friends is to get close to people who like the same things you do. For instance if there is a hobby at your school or community that you like then go there and meet the people who also do it.

Police deploy to save autistic boy's birthday
For Glenn Buratti's birthday, his mother Ashlee Buratti said she invited his entire class over for a party. When none of the 16 kids showed up, her son was devastated.
"To see the look on his face killed me inside," Buratti told CBS News Orlando affiliate WKMG. Her son, who is autistic, was so saddened by the absence of guests, she said, that he refused to smile. Ref. Source 5

Its heartbreaking, its also sometimes the reality with children under the spectrum. Any sort of oddity isolates you from other kids and kids today are desperate to be 'cool' and look 'cool' so they don't want to be known as someone that hangs with the autistic child - silly!

Its a terrible shame that he may not even realize why no one wants to come to his party. If the invitations were just given out loosely and the children didn't want to come they may not have but were the parents of the children also informed? That might have helped. Good that the local authorities made up for it.

The sad reality of Autism is that most on the spectrum have challenges making long lasting friendships. Oddities and quirks cause isolation by others intolerant of such behavior. See this story that broke a father's heart (See attached).

A teacher that comes to my home to help with teaching the boys once asked my youngest to tell about his friends and he said, "I can't, I have no friends." I try to get my boys to understand that they have each other as friends and their parents as their best friends. While its not the same I cannot force people to act civil especially this day's breed of neurotypical children that exhibit sociopath behavior.
