The mayor of Grand Rapids, Michigan was the keynote speaker at a fundraising event for the Planned Parenthood abortion business, where he defended taxpayer funding for the organization that does more than 25 percent of the abortions nationwide.

However, his defense of taxpayer funding for the abortion giant is not what is making waves today - instead, a comment about pro-life advocates is upsetting pro-life people. Michigan Abortion Clinic Shut Down, Boarded Up By Fire Marshall

The Muskegon Fire Department has posted closure notices on the Women's Medical Services in Muskegon, Michigan, and boarded up the abortion clinic until further notice.

The pro-life group Operation Rescue informed LifeNews of the closure today and said it occurred because of significant health and safety violations. Ref. Source 7

Michigan County Denies Planned Parenthood Abstinence Ed Grant

A county in Michigan has denied a $12,000 grant to Planned Parenthood. Ironically, the local affiliate of the nation's biggest abortion business claimed it wanted to teach abstinence education to young people.

Grand Traverse County Commissioners denied Planned Parenthood's application for the taxpayer-financed grant to pay for abstinence-based sex education in area schools. The local Traverse City newspaper has additional details. Ref. Source 5

A new report from the state health department in Michigan shows the number of abortions in 2011 - the most recent year for which figures are available - are up very slightly. But, since 1987, abortions in Michigan have dropped more than 50 percent. Ref. Source 2

Two more abortion centers have closed in Michigan, after one of them was exposed a few years ago for dumping the bodies of aborted babies in the dumpster outside the facility.

Abortion "Doctor" Leaves Decapitated Unborn Baby Inside Mother

Robert Alexander's abortion clinic was shut down in December by the city of Muskegon, Michigan after unsafe and unsanitary conditions were found. Now, state officials are wondering why the state medical board has not terminated Alexander's medical license.

The state legislature had planned to hold a hearing on Tuesday on Alexander and a Muskegon OB/GYN was expected to testify at the hearing. Instead, the doctor wrote that Alexander should have his license revoked. Ref. Source 4

Michigan Cmte OKs Bill to Help Stop Secret Abortions on Teen Girls

On June 18, the Michigan Senate Judiciary Committee approved, by a 3-1 vote, legislation designed to prevent minors seeking abortion without parental consent from "judge shopping."

Minor girls who have been denied a judicial bypass at one court would not be permitted to seek a bypass at another county court. S.B. 254 also creates guidelines for judges in making a determination regarding the maturity of the girl seeking an abortion, and her best interests. These guidelines are consistent with the line of questioning recommended by the Michigan Benchbook, and include taking into consideration whether the minor girl's parents have neglected or abused her.
