"Genuinely interested in her colleages and friends, and quietly kind to all, she exemplifies excellence in everything she does. As a secretary, teacher, and administrator, she finds her greatest satisfaction in the knowledge that she has done her best, her greatest praise comes from excellent service."

"Shirley began her career as Dean of Women at Caribbean Union College (CarUC) in Trinidad, West Indies. After several years as office secretary of the Guyana Conference of SDAs in South America, she came to AU to earn a BA and an MA in English. During this time she was English Department secretary and taught composition. In 1988 she returned to CarUC as chair of the English Department, to inspire her group of teachers with her enthusiasm, support, and Christian spirit. Evidence of her leadership effectiveness led to her appointment as Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in 1995, and later Vice President for Academic Administration. In March 2002 she became the first woman to become President [Ag.] of CarUC."
