I don't know where you live, but that's not the LDS community I'm familiar with. I do see a lot of ex-Mormons and Anti-Mormons who focus much of their attention on sexual matters and try to throw it in discussions of all kinds with members, but I do not really see it as a hot topic among folks I know in the church.
The problem with the calendars is portraying in a sexual manner these young missionaries who were out saving souls. There's nothing mysterious about it. But as has been mentioned already, what about the souls who were brought to the gospel and the church by one of these young men -- who discussed moral purity and modesty in their lessons to the new members? What happens when they see these young moral examples now flaunting their bodies in a sexual way? That's my problem with the whole premise, and why the promoter of this calendar should have been excommunicated. I don't agree with his losing his Phd over it, but he is unrepentant about the calendar and so faces the consequences within the church. However, as with many such enterprises, I believe he'll make lots of money and go on to become a devout critic of the church. I think it's a sad story all around.
