Does Your Vote Count? - Page 2

international QUOTE
I would like to see the electoral college abolished. Until it is then the common persons vote will never count.

That would be an absolute disaster and the common person's vote DOES count because everyone votes in the college.

The electoral college system in the US is a check and balance on a few large (in population) states dictating policy to the rest of the country. It is, in other words, a protection of a minority of citizens who are identified by region (or urban/suburban/rural in modern times).

Since every state has two senators no matter what their population, small (in population) states essentially each have extra votes in the electoral college because they outnumber large states.

So one should NEVER seek to oppose or modify the electoral college unless one is interested in bringing down the country. The reason why leftwingers oppose the electoral college is because they seek to neutralize and silence minority voices and it adds to their power to mobilize the mob. The ancient Greeks learned the hard way about pure democracy (mob rule) and that is partly why we have a constitutional republic and the electoral college.

Why? I totally agree with bcspace on this one. It will be a disaster. Yes, it needs to change in various aspects but abolishing isn't the solution.

Does Your Vote Count? History & Civil Business Politics

As much as I hate this concept and how it is applied, I have to agree it needs to stay. We have a similar plan in Canada so that the smaller provinces have proportionate representation in the election process.

As far as does my vote count as to electing the head of state I would say not really as much as electing the party that will lead. I do believe the party leader can change without re-election. Also I do not think the individual leader has much pull compared to the party he is leading.

I do think my vote is responsible for the outcome of an election though. I wish more thought this way then we might get better turn out at the votes.

Count Vote Does

Presidential electors can be forced to uphold popular vote, Supreme Court rules. The high court decided that states can force their share of the nation's 538 electors to uphold the will of the voters on Election Day. Ref. USAToday.
