Sudan: Living With The Trauma Of Fgm

This story made me sick. To know young girls have to go through this made me even more disgusted and often you just have to ask... 'Why?'.

SUDAN: Living with the trauma of FGM

Omnia was nine years old the day she was forced onto a cold metal table by her mother and grandmother and circumcised by a stranger. Now 22, she has never forgotten the incident.

"The stranger told me to take [off] my underwear, and I told her no," explained Omnia, who is now a teacher at a local school in Khartoum, the Sudanese capital. "She said to me, 'You have to.' Before I knew what was happening she was cutting me, and I started screaming.

Fgm Trauma With Living Sudan

I have long known about this barbaric custom. It isn't just in Sudan, but is in many of the predominantly Muslim countries, as well as some non-Muslim African cultures. It even happens frequently in "Palestine", although I don't know if it is as prevalent there as in Sudan.

Sudan: Living With The Trauma Of Fgm History & Civil Business Politics

One of the worst factors of this practice is that, even though all the older women have experienced the same horrendous thing, the women do not prepare the girls for what is to happen to them -- not even the mothers or grandmothers. There is no discussion; nothing. Just the forced act at the appointed time. I think this adds to the physical trauma a huge emotional devastation at being so betrayed.

In my opinion, of course.
