Iron Butt Saddlesore 1000

Ever heard of the Iron Butt SaddleSore 1000? It is riding a motorcycle at least 1,000 miles in 24 hours or less. I am hoping to do it this summer.

If I can find someone to ride with me, it is a go, but I am not sure I want to attempt this as a solo ride.

To prepare, I will ride several progressively longer rides. I rode approximately 760 miles in one day a few days back. I was really hurting the last 300 miles.

This time I plan to train. Also to study up on the suggestions and tactics used by others to make the ride more successful.

For me, I think it is similar to what a marathon runner experiences. I will never run a marathon, I wouldn't want to nor would I even come close to enjoying it. However, this is the ultimate bike marathon.

Said as only a true biker would say it, but I am sure after 500 miles you no longer see the scenery, just your goal in mind - right? Are you allowed a certain number of stops or do you just stop as needed? Well the only advice I can give you is for your body. A good exercise for sitting too long is of course stiff leg back raise (where you touch your toes and come back up to an almost erect position) and lunges, but before you perform the exercises ensure you stretch each muscle for 20 seconds. These should bring blood circulation to your hip, buttocks and lower back - when it stops.

Well, in order to best accomplish this ride in the time allotted, it will be all highway miles...not much scenery. However, just riding the bike will be fun itself for the first 500 miles. What I am hoping is that by actively training for it, I can stretch the enjoyment out as far as possible. Maybe the first 800 miles. Then just tough my way through the last 200.

Thanks for the exercises. They will definately help me. These are exactly the kinds of hints I am hoping to acquire before I set out.

As far as the format of the drive. You choose your own path to follow. You must get a date, time, stamped gas receipt to start, collect and save all other gas receipts as well as log all stops in a book. If you stop for more than 20 minutes, this too must be logged. Then when you have successfully completed the trip, you submit all of your paperwork in for certification. So, you can stop when and where you please.

I will need to stop about every 120 miles for gas and will probably get off the bike and stretch every other stop. I will also bring a toothbrush and credit card in case I decide it is too much for me to accomplish. I don't plan to kill myself to do it. I will tolerate a bit of discomfort, but I won't get dangerous.
