Would you rather be homeless and destitute or indentured? My feeling is that slavery is still a viable option as long as controls are placed on slave masters. I could accomplish a lot if I were to hold slaves. In return for labor, the slave receives food and shelter, education and health care, for the term of the indenture.
I also think that we should consider the homeless as guides for handicapped people. If I were blind, I would much prefer a human companion than a dog. Is it possible to rationally discuss this topic?
I do not think slavery is a good thing in any situation. I see no reason for it either. One human has no right to own another. The methods you describe for indenture could be used without enslaving another. You can provide food, shelter and education without the need to hold them as slaves.
Why must they be enslaved? You can provide jobs and have the payment be as outlined in your plan for slavery. The difference would be you don't have 100% complete power over these people. If they wanted to leave, they could.

A couple of points come to mind right off the bat. First, many homeless people are mentally ill, or may be mentally disabled. I'm not sure if they would be competent enough to labor for someone else -- which in my opinion is why these are homeless in the first place, I.e., they can't hold a regular job.
Second, "indentured" when used in this manner means that this person somehow owes you something, and the term of indenture is satisfied when the debt is "paid" by working it off. I don't see how I could indenture a homeless person to me for a specified term when there is nothing to bind them with. How do you determine the end of the term if there is no debt owed?
Third, the very idea of slavery goes against all concepts of freedom and individual liberty, and the worth of souls.

Slavery is more than compensating for services with food and shelter. Slavery is complete control over another human. It is not a dead concept, although most countries have banned it. In fact, many abusive relationships resemble slavery more than partnership.
The idea of hiring the homeless as servants may be sound, although the term "personal assistant" or "housekeeper" may be more appropriate, with food, clothing, and shelter as pay. However, when it comes to OWNING another person, it is immoral and illegal for good reason.

I cant say that I'm surprised that someone actually brought up the idea of enslaving those less fortunate. What a horrible idea. There is absolutely nothing that is right about forcing someone into servitude no matter what nice little banner you put on it. Freedom of choice is a human right that all people of the world should have. Anyone who was a slave for very long would surely soon long for the horrible street life of their former free life over the 'compensated' life of slavery in which they had no choice.
To show you how life is... the author of this post was deleted because he had such an attitude, he refused to follow our rules (yet talked about enslaving others that would follow his rules) and he also chose to use the most based uncouth departure message. This sounds off topic, but it is not, it is merely to show what kind of person would come up with such a concept in modern times. It is very easy to talk about enslaving others when you are not the one going to be the slave, I would love to see the author's reaction if the table turns.

It would be an on topic discussion to discern whether these people living in the sub poverty levels were not enslaved in any case. We have set up a system that at one time was supposed to be a security blanket, the welfare state, and let it develop into a lifestyle. This lifestyle does not promote community involvement and is self perpetuating. We have not found a good method to ensure the opportunities are present to progress up the class scale. Until we find this balance the divide between the haves and have-nots will widen into a greater chasm. While it is true that many homeless are do have mental problems and some are of life misfortunes, many of these people were not homeless until after the storm. The community did not rally around these people at a time a crisis and looting and anarchy prevailed.
