Considering the history of Las Vegas, which is the most known place in Nevada, one has to wonder if it was not for all the illegal gambling, alcohol consumption and other mob activities that took place in this small town if Nevada would not have been taken over by California as some people thought. The 'culture' was formed on vice, but is the rest of Nevada like this or is it just Las Vegas?

Nevada History & Civil Business Politics

The rest of Nevada, is quiet yawn nothing. Eighty mile stretches of desert between towns on lonely highways. In fact, 90% of Nevada's population lives in only 10% of it's area. (2.4 Million People). Yes, in Las Vegas and Reno.

There is some vice in these "middle of nowhere" places. Nevada is the only state with legal prostitution, and some of these counties have "ranches", which are more like brothels.

People from Las Vegas have told me that it is not all what other people think (although part of it definitely is). There are some communities that are quite nice. I have visited three times because I used to have cousins that lived there, and we had a great time. The only time I remember going near the strip was to get to an amusement park ride that is part of the MGM Grande. It was so empty, I remember riding one roller coaster with my cousins 11 times in a row - no lines! Talk about 9-year-old heaven. I also recall taking pictures outside the LDS temple.

Nevada (mostly Las Vegas and Reno of course) is also continuing to grow so fast that they supposedly have the second best package offer for new teachers in the nation, after Alaska, making it a very tempting location for future teachers.

If anyone does go to Nevada, do yourself a favor and visit the interior of the state, away from Las Vegas and Reno.

Yes, it's the middle of nowhere, and that's part of the charm.

The beautiful mountains and valleys are a nice escape from Las Vegas.

In fact, compared to the rest of the state, Las Vegas is way out of place.

You've all focused on the Southern part of Nevada. Let me introduce you to Northern Nevada - Lake Tahoe! North Shore! Truckee! Heavenly Valley! Incline Village! Virginia City! Beautiful mountains, lots of snow and pine trees, rich in history of early American settlers and great Native American Indian legacy. Yes, there are still casinos, just as there are in Las Vegas and pretty much any other city in Nevada (and slot machines in restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores, etc), but it doesn't detract from the lovely surroundings. Beautiful place to live or vacation, I love Tahoe and the 50 miles surrounding it.

Emerald Bay is probably one of the most photographed places on the earth. Lake Tahoe, as I understand it, is still one of the most pristine lakes in the U.S.user posted image

If I'm correct in the Book of Jasher it lists, helping the homeless as one of the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Nevada may have one of the best teachers packages, when I went to school in nevada the teachers (75%) didn't care about the students education (at least in the special ed. department).
