Rep. John Conyers stepping down from top post on Judiciary Committee amid probe into harassment allegations. Rep. John Conyers is stepping down from his top spot on the House Judiciary Committee as a congressional ethics panel probes sexual harassment allegations against the Michigan Democrat. Conyers again denied the harassment allegations in a statement released Sunday but said he has requested to step down as the Judiciary Committee's ranking member. "To be clear, I would like very much to remain as ranking member," he said in a statement. "There is still much work to be done on core concerns like securing civil rights, enacting meaningful criminal justice reforms, and protecting access to the ballot box… But I have come to believe that my presence as ranking member on the committee would not serve these efforts while the ethics committee investigation is pending." Ref. CNN.
Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi calls for Conyers' resignation. The House minority leader said Thursday misconduct allegations against Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., are "Serious, disappointing, and very credible." Conyers, 88, has acknowledged his office settled a claim with a staff member who accused him of harassment, but he denied any wrongdoing. He has stepped down from his position as the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, and has checked himself into a hospital for a stress-related ailment. House Speaker Paul Ryan also said Thursday Conyers should resign. Ref. USAToday.
Rep. John Conyers says he will 'retire today' from his congressional seat amid accusations of sexually harassing his employees. Conyers is the longest-serving active member of Congress. Facing a rising chorus of voices demanding he step down because of sexual harassment claims, U.S. Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., is leaving the seat he has held for more than five decades, a swift and crushing fall from grace for a civil rights icon and the longest-serving active member of Congress. On a Detroit radio show he said he endorses his son, John Conyers III, to replace him. Ref. USAToday.
Yes he needed to step down and this is something he is finally doing so no more of our tax payer money will be spent by him paying off women he keeps sexually harassing. I do not think his son would be a good replacement as he may be just as bad.
