Parents: What Is Your Child Playing?

Are You Aware?

As a Parent or Guardian, do you know what your children are playing when they turn on that PC, PS, X-box, etc.?

PARENTS: DO YOU KNOW WHAT VIDEO GAMES YOUR KIDS ARE PLAYING?

The film `Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines` carried an R rating in the theaters, a Teen rating for its video game spin-off and a probable TV14 (V) when the edited version comes to broadcast television. The movie and the game both star Arnold Schwarzenegger, who recently signed a bill that bans the sale or rental of violent video games to minors in California.

Playing Child Your What Parents

I believe few parents actually know about even how to turn on a game system let alone the intricates of a game that their young one palms off as 'just a game' when in fact it is doing more that as we discussed in the "Violence and Sex in Games" thread. The other aspect is that some parents use games as a crutch to keep their children either home, busy or out of the way. Where are the days of going out as a family or playing a game of monopoly on the dining table?

Parents: What Is Your Child Playing? Gaming Video & Issues Computer

I take great care and concern in regards to what is viewed and played in my home. Although I often see that others do not share my concern in this issue. When the GTA games started becoming more graphic and more detailed in their actions, I made it an issue to start finding out all I could about what is available in my household. I have even taken up conversations with other parents about letting my single child be exposed to certain games while visiting their homes. One mother had no idea of what was in some of the games her children were playing. It doesn't make me the most popular parent in the eyes of some of my sons friends, but being a single parent means that I am not always going to win a popularity contest.

As I tell my son, "I'm your Father...not the President. I wasn't elected. I am a dictator, so I don't care if I win the popular vote."....*chuckle*

I also have the mature theme setting passworded on the PS2, and the DVD player, so my child can't even use it to watch movies that are R rated.

Yeah... I'm a sneaky kids worst nightmare. A Dad that tried all that stuff myself when I was a kid.

Playing Child Your What Parents

My kids play a game console called the V-smile. Its by V-Tech and has almost exclusively learning games. Since I buy or screen every game they play, I know that they only play educational games. I prefer ones that are close to what they are supposed to be learning as to supplement their learning, as opposed to teaching them something different.

Parents: What Is Your Child Playing?

I know what my children are playing, I have a PC, X-Box 360 and a PS2 to offer them.

My 11 month old, still interested in the tweenies and teletubbies expectedly.

But my 11 year old, now thats a different matter, she wants the latest games, of which are exactly what I am looking to get for myself anyway, so no problem financially, but then come the rating of the games. As I'm 29 its not really a problem for me.

But Paige is 11, now she should be interested in the Barbies or Bratz games, but she was caught playing the latest GTA game.

Now to be fair she gave me the reason as it had been built up so much in the media as the game of the century, and then all the 'something' rights organisations had chirped up with their 'it should be banned' spin that it was more curiosity of what it was really like, she has even said that it wasn't that good. (of which I agreed with while she was in the room, and then nearly fainted when she left through shock)

Now I agree that we should keep an eye out for this but thats all really, Keeping an eye out.

Parents What Your Child Playing

All the games my 11-year old daughter plays on the PS1, I have sat down and played with her. The one questionable game I have that she will play sometimes is Mortal Kombat Trilogy. We've sat down and played it together and I enable the fatalities, etc when I play with her, but she can't enable them on her own. We've talked about the violence in the game, and I've even allowed her to sit and watch the movies with me. She understands well enough that its a game, and not reality, and that what is depicted in the game/movie is not meant to be re-enacted in reality.
Other than that game she is playing Spyro the Dragon or some harmless Game Boy Advance games like Super Mario Brothers, etc. Luckily, my daughter is not big on video games. In fact, I recently bought a VG Pocket Max, which is a handheld that has about 50 games built into it. They are very simple games with simple graphics, but she loves playing them because of their simplicity. She would rather play that than some of the PS1 games I mentioned earlier.

PARENTS WARNED TO OVERSEE THEIR CHILDREN'S VIDEO GAMES

Parents, do you know your Doom from your Super Mario? How about your Halo2 from your Legend of Zelda? Much like movies, video games carry suggested ratings, assigned by the Entertainment Software Rating Board, which act as a guideline for parents.
