Much like anything else, I think that if you are at risk for this then you should have yearly, or at least every other year, exams. Risk factors would be a history of melanoma in your family, very light skin, and I think people with freckles are also at risk. If you have these risk factors and you have had excessive exposure, you should be checked perhaps more than yearly… but only with excessive exposure. Normal exposure would mean yearly.

I think it also depends on your sun exposure too. Even if fair or light skinned if you do not get a lot of sun then perhaps you do not have to worry as much. If you are a sun worshiper then you may need to get checked more.

Yes, I can see even someone with my Mediterranean complexion that spends a lot of time in the sun should be checked, even without the family history. I just wanted to get it out there that family history plays an important part in this and if you have the history you should definitely get the checkups.
