Instant Replay

What is your opinion on the use of instant replay in sports? Most major competitive sports use instant replay here in the US with the exception of MLB baseball. However, MLB is considering using it for help with home runs that are close to the foul pole or fan interference calls. Soccer also does not have instant replay, but the need for it is very slim. The NFL recently moved to instant replay and challenges by coaches and it has been met with mixed emotions. The NBA only uses it for last second shots to make sure that time had not run out yet. Even Cricket has moved to using instant replay for outs that are challenged. What is your take on this, and should it only be used in professional sports or are college and amateur sports also eligible?

Replay Instant

I think instant replay is one of those good and bad changes that have come to sports. In many ways, instant replay has helped the NFL to make better decisions, especially in big games. But, officials in the NFL have wasted instant replay and continue to make bad decisions even in the face of, what looks to everyone else, to be incontrovertable evidence to the contrary.

All in all, if officials will use instant replay and are willing to say they made a mistake on a call, then its is a good thing to have. If they don't, then it just holds up the game and causes frustration to the teams and fans.

I was not aware of other sports that use instant replay. I think in the case for MLB, it could be very helpful in close calls, but I would prefer to see it highly restricted to what can and cannot use instant replay. But I think that it should not be used in college games. The refs are often just bad, and if every bad play gets reviewed, we are looking at a very long game.

In New Zealand, where rugby is the national sport, we have officials that oversee the game, and make judgements on several aspects of play. The Video Referee is only called into play by the Match Referee, and his decisions are given to the Match Ref for final judgement. So the Video Ref is only used for advice. Generally speaking, the time delay is inconsequential, as the instant replays are on the video screen and the crowd can yell, scream, and get totally involved in the call. It adds to the entertainment spectacle.
Our favourite sports, Rugby, Rugby League, and Cricket all use video replays very successfully.
I think our general feeling is that if you can place a bet on the game, then the result should be in no doubt, and therefore any hairline decision should be as correct as possible. So we use video technology, audio technology, computer modelling, slow motion video, super slow motion high definition, you name it we use it, and the crowds love it.

Replay Instant

I love instant replay specially in football (soccer). There has been so many injustices over the years that I think if they had at that time this system in place maybe some of the World Cup winners would not be today's World Cup winners. But at the same time I wonder how much time will be wasted checking the play and all? It would be kind of hard.

Replay Instant

Instant replays are ok in stop start games like Rugby, Cricket and Amercian Football. However it would be impossible to implement in Football. Technology could come into play in Football in the shape of goal cameras to answer the problem of whether the ball crossed the line or not

Instant Replay

I like instant replays, especially in college football (American football). Even if you take all the administration reasons for it, I like it simple because it gives me a chance to see something I may not have the first time around. If a player does some really amazing play, I may have been looking at another part of the screen and missed it, and the replay gives me a chance to see what I may have missed.

Having instant replay is not going to fix all problems, but the idea of all bad calls being erased is unrealistic. Instant replay has been used for the betterment of a bad call in many accounts. No one single solution will ever fix all problems, and I do not think that it should be faulted for not being the ultimate cure. There are stubborn referee's who will not change their opinion simply because they do not want to retract what they had previously stated.

I know in college football they have implemented a restriction to instant replays being used to change the call of a game. If a team gets what they consider a bad call and want the officials to look at it again via instant replay, then there is a stipulation. If the officials rewatch it and agree that the call was a bad one and change, then there is nothing lost. If a team has the officials look at the footage, and their call is maintained, then it counts as one of their time outs. So really no major time is lost.
