No Word - No Pay
One of the most annoying things about working in Web Design is this: People have No Word and they do not pay. Unlike other professions where they see you performing a function like: doctor, mason, builder... in web design they only know that you are 'doing something out there', but they do not realize how much time and effort goes into every graphic, script or text that they view.
As far as I am concerned, if you cannot afford something then DO NOT engage my services, after all it is not like I am some teeny bopper with nothing to do but chase you down for money that is owed. If you are a web / graphics designer and have problems with people paying you then rant on here!
I have never done enough web design in the past to have this problem with my web clients but I have had this problem on a number of occasions when I was doing software scripting. I had once client particular that took nearly a year to ever receive full payment even after the work had been done. I found out later that in this case he had made himself difficult to reach due to financial problems after his wife had had serious mental illness issues and he was ashamed to really speak about it. That doesn't change the fact that I waited a year for a 7000$ payment but I would have been very understand had he been able to come to me about it at the time. I doubt that this is the case in most but I thought I would share my experience anyway.
I wish that I could say that it took long to receive a US$7,000.00 payment, most times the payment is a small amount (in the hundreds or even tens) and yet the client behaves as though it is a fortune I am getting for doing nothing. I believe honesty is the best policy, but I still have a contract, because most people in this day and age is not honest (whether willfully or just as part of naturally being untimely).
