Tampa Bay Rays

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays franchise began in 1998 and they've had a losing record every year since. Needless to say they have never been in the playoffs, but they hope to do so this year. With new manager Joe Maddon, the Devil Rays look to do the impossible and win either a division title or wild card spot in a division which sports such teams as the Yankees, Red Sox and Orioles. The biggest problem I see with the Devil Rays is lack of talent, and this year is no exception. The pitching staff is anaemic and their best talent at bat is Aubrey Huff who is currently injured. Currently they are in last place with a 8-9 record, so they have a tough road ahead of them if they expect to be in playoff contention come September.

Only one game above 500, yet people still say they are lacking talent. This team continues to impress me by its pure ability to keep fighting. It routinely doesn't have the man power to be competative, but it stays in the hunt every year, despite what people say.

The Devil Rays just came off an impressive series against the Boston Red Sox where they beat the likes of Curt Schilling. The offense has improved dramatically it seems. We will need to monitor this to see if they can hang with the 'big boys' in the AL East.

Rays prospect Young suspended 50 games in bat-throwing incident

international QUOTE
Tampa Bay Devil Rays prospect Delmon Young was suspended for 50 games without pay by the International League on Tuesday for throwing a bat that hit a replacement umpire in the chest.

IL president Randy Mobley said he believed the suspension was the longest in the league's 123-year history.

I saw the video clip of this incident on SportsCenter and was shocked at his actions. You don't actually see him throw the bat, because the camera stays on the umpire. But you do see him walk off, and then a bat comes flying in from that direction and hits the umpire in the chest. These were also replacement umpires as the normal umpires are on strike. I am glad the league took this position to enforce that such behavior, whether it be minor or major league baseball, is unacceptable.
