Why Do Some Pregnant Mothers Smoke?
If they know it is hurting their unborn child?
That was a seriously strong statement to make. But I agree with it. I have been able to quit, like recently, when I wanted to, cold turkey. How can a woman, who has more than just herself to think about, not take the step and just quit. I don't accept excuses for women how either refuse or can't quit smoking while pregnant. Its your childs health, stop being selfish and suck it up and quit!
Okay, I'm going to put my neck out here. I smoked when I was pregnant with my daughter. Not very much, I cut way back on my daily number, but I did smoke. I was blessed and lucky enough that my daughter was born healthy and strong - I've seen "cigarette babies" who are so tiny and sickly, and it's really horrible. My doctor told me that the added stress of quitting, with everything else that was happening in my life at that time, would be worse for the baby than smoking a few cigarettes. Personally, I think he was wrong and if he had been more forceful about quitting I may have done so.

(preparing for the backlash)
Hate to add to the backlash of someone I know and like, but here goes. My wife has given me three wonderful children. She smokes almost a pack a day. She quit during all three pregnancies. It was hard, but the "stress" of quitting smoking is truly negligible in the first month of pregnancy. The "stress" of quitting lasts less than a week, as opposed to 9 months of fetal exposure to cigarettes.
If my wife would not have taken the initiative, I would have made her quit. The damage that the stress of quitting smoking is an untested fable while the results of smoking during pregnancy is well documented. I have heard other women say the same thing as you that their doctors said, but that just sounds against common sense to me.
My feelings about this is: jail any pregnant woman (and anyone who smokes around a pregnant woman) for using any kind of harm inducing drug starting with smoking! The jail time should consist of monitored solitary confinement (not really a typical prison) where they will be forced to quit.
Recently, there was an ad shown on TV about a little baby boy trying to fight for his life because both parents smoke. The baby has not developed any male genitalia and cannot breathed properly - disgusting to think that a psychological habit is more important than the welfare of your own flesh and blood.
Wow it's hard to believe so many people don't like the fact of a pregnant smoker, I mean I don't like the fact either but I think it's way harsh to put them in a type of prison. Yes, someone should keep an eye on her for the child's sake but not imprison her. In my opinion they should outlaw smoking entirely to save everyone the time and effort.
