E-waste
After you are done with your old computer where does it go? New Zealand is telling computer makers that it takes a lot to get 'their' waste recycled.

PC MAKERS PUT ON THE SPOT OVER LEVY A levy of about $20-$25 on the sale of computer system units, monitors and TV sets should be imposed by July 2008 to pay for the recycling of e-waste, says a report sponsored by the Environment Ministry. Ref. See here |
Probably what will happen is that the computer/technology companies will promote the e-waste program, but at the same time factor the costs for the e-waste into the prices of the computers, etc.
If the companies and/or customers become dissatisfied with that situation, then the government will probably place an e-waste tax on the computers, etc. and assume responsibility of the e-waste and its processing. Then people wouldn't have to worry about certain technology companies ripping them off via the possible increased prices as a result of the cost of the processing of the e-waste.
