Being Higher Philosophy

I think that the majority of philosophers believe in some sort of higher being, but meld it to a more logical end that religion. A good example of this is the Deists of the enlightenment age. Deists like Thomas Paine who influenced the American Revolution so much wrote long dissertations on the philosophy of deism over religion, yet never considered no creator an option. Of course science was not what it was today, and the unanswered question of where we came from had no other option besides a creator. To balance the need to answer where we came from with the illogical proposition of a god that constantly interfered with humanity, was a constant theme. Explaining the unknown is a philosophical staple and a deity is often that answer.

For me many of them didn't specifically say there was a need to believe in a higher being but I'm sure there own awareness noted that there must be someone even smarter than they were. In some ways religion was always beneficial once it kept the population in order.
