It finally happened, and I knew it would someday. Thank goodness I have a relatively recent backup of my personal files. I didn't back up the software because I figured I had all the disks and didn't need to waste space on my backup for that.
The bad news is, that the software requires certain system levels - for instance, the anti-virus software requires Win2K SP 3 or higher in order to install. Well, can't get the SP 3 without internet access, and as soon as the computer hits the internet, it's hit with malicious-ware. This corrupts the files, overloads memory, and something called "lsass.exe" causes a complete shut down of the system.
Every time.
It's been three days now, and I'm stuck. Calling all Techies! Please help restore my system!
I've got a clean install of Win2k. What's next?
I appreciate your help, more than I can say.
Roz
I would start by using different anti-virus. There are some good free programs out there. Then, get a spyware removal and protection program.
AVG free antivirus: https://www.grisoft.com/doc/products-avg-an...ng/us/tpl/tpl01
Ad-Aware anti-spyware: https://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
Once you have those up and running, you should be able to connect to the internet and get the other things you need.
Another thing is to get a good free firewall installed.
ZoneAlarm: https://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/comp...reeDownload.jsp
You should be able to download these anywhere, and put them on a data stick. None of the programs are very large, but they all do at least a fair job.
I need to know a few things:
1. When you install Win2k, do you format disk first so that it is a totally clean install or do you just install over what is already there? If you format the disk then read on... if not, format the disk by inserting the CD and using that option.
2. The CD you have is original, or something someone made for you? If it is original... read on, if not I would suggest getting WinXP depending on the capability of your machine.
3. When you have finished installing and you can verify that everything is working normally then immediately connect to the net and download:
FireFox - there is an option on my page: https://www.bordeglobal.net
(Enter site and you will see at the bottom of the page a button)
AVG Anti-virus as Nighthawk instructed and Zonealarm.
4. After installing FireFox stop using Internet Explorer - use only FireFox. You should now be good. I think what is happening is you are not formating the disk and just installing over your current system.
Hope that helps.
1. I formatted the hard drive (at least six different times, after each attack)
2. I have the original install CD
3. Connecting to the internet to download anything without the AVG and ZA already running, I got hit every time with something that would shut the system down before I could even get anything fully downloaded. I finally went to my office and downloaded AVG, ZA, Firefox, W2k SP3, and Ad-Aware, and saved them on a jump drive.
4. It seems to be working fine, now, although I have my fingers permanently crossed (making it difficult to type )
and 5: My system is so much speedier without all the ancient junk on it - leftover games my son installed and who knows what else! So, while I'm not happy about how it all happened, it's great to have a clean machine again.
Thanks, you guys.
Great to have you back. You need to check out the Secret Board, there are some threads there with tips on how to make sure your system is protected and where you can be attacked. I would also keep those programs on your jump drive on a DVD / CD so that if it ever happens again you have them right at your disposal.
Thank you, and good to be back up and running.

Great! It is always nice to hear that my advice worked out for someone. It is all too often that it doesn't!
Now, a very important thing to keep in mind is that you need to check for updates on all of those programs on a regular basis, and store those updates away. Prepare for a "rainy day".
Or, you could just get a Macintosh, and not worry about those things.
Farseer,
Something else to make sure of is to download spybot and ad aware. But further, something I recently found that works great is ccleaner. It also fixes registry problems as well if you chose to use that function and deletes so much hidden stuff, its really amazing. I didn't even know that I had that much hidden stuff in my cache just hanging around in memory causing my PC to slow down. If you google it, you will find it easily. Another good product that you would have to pay for is registry healer. It creates registry backups and fixes registry problems.
Glad your up again!
