Barker Bob

I saw this guy a couple of years ago and remember thinking Bob, it is time to give someone else a chance!. He was good at what he did though and I enjoyed his interaction with the audience, especially when they tried to jump all over him and he tried to brace himself.

Bob Barker is finally retiring from television and his popular show "The Price is Right", he will retire from good next month. He says is getting a bit too much to get up early in the morning every day to do the show and even though his mental capacity is great, his physical part is not helping much. He is 83 years old!

WJZ) BALTIMORE He is the Ironman of television. Now Bob Barker is heading toward his final showcase. The silver-haired daytime TV icon is retiring next month after hosting more than 6,600 episodes of "The Price is Right".

"I'm so thankful to the viewers. I'm so grateful to them," said Barker to Vic Carter after WJZ was granted V.I.P. access inside the Los Angeles studios.

"They've allowed me to come into their homes for half a century," said Barker.

Barker is in his 35th and final year as the host. But it is his 50th year on television overall. Barker has won a total of 17 Emmy awards as host and producer of not only the highest rated daytime game show, but also the longest running in history. In 2002, Barker broke Johnny Carson's record for continuous performances on the same network show.

"It is the viewer, the person right out there, who decides who will stick around. Here I am, 83, [and I have] been doing something I love all of my adult life, and without them who knows what I would be doing," Barker said.

Barker was born in Darrington, Wash. on Dec. 12, 1923. But he spent most of his youth on a South Dakota Indian Reservation where his mother was a schoolteacher. When World War II broke out, Barker became a fighter pilot. After being discharged, he took a job at a local Missouri radio station hosting the "Bob Barker Show." He soon would make his national television debut as host of the popular "Truth or Consequences." He hosted 3,254 consecutive performances of that show for 18 years until he took a turn on "The Price is Right." The rest as they say is history!

Next month will mark the end of a 35 year run on CBS. For 10 of those years, he says he contemplated quitting. But he was having so much fun with the show he didn't want to leave...
