Rocky 6: Rocky Balboa

REVIEW: 'ROCKY BALBOA' TOO OFTEN A JOKE

"Rocky Balboa," the sixth (and hopefully last) installment in the underdog saga of the Italian Stallion, straddles the line between nostalgia and self-parody and frequently teeters toward the latter.

Balboa Rocky Rocky

Is this some sort of joke? :rolleyes.gif: The guy is 60 years old! CNN review was pretty harsh when they said:

QUOTE
But let's be honest: Was anyone (besides Stallone) really curious to see how Rocky might turn out at age 60? He is in massively muscular, fabulous shape -- truly a specimen to behold at any age -- and maybe that's the point after all.

Stallone says he wanted to close out the franchise with a sense of satisfaction after the bomb that was "Rocky V" in 1990. But maybe he also wanted to stand there covered in fake blood and sweat, wrapped in a silk robe, and revel in the warm glow of having an entire arena full of extras chant, "Rocky! Rocky!" one more time.

Back in 1976, it all seemed so inspiring; the original "Rocky" was a small gem that became the surprise best-picture Oscar winner. In 2006, though, "Rocky Balboa" merely feels like a shameless vanity project.

I guess Stallone wants to feel somehow "young" again, at least, in heart.

You know this can't be the last one...not possible. There will be a Rocky VII. I can picture it now...

Rocky is in a nursing home. Everytime the TV says CNN...he thinks it said Adrian and yells at the top of his lungs; "Yooooo Aaaadrian". During his dominos game with a aged Apollo Creed, Rocky finds Apollo cheated by hiding a few extra dominos up his sleeve. A argument starts and the other nursing home patients gather round...{quietly the Rocky theme music comes in}. The 2 former warriors pull their wheelchairs from the table and face each other. In the background another CNN commercial and Rocky flashes back..."YOOOOOO Adrain...I know she is somewhere around here". All of the sudden another older warrior limps from the shadows...it is Drago! The massive overdoses of steroids have finally taken their toll and inbetween severe headaches with each step he mumbles the words "destroy". Drago eases up behind Apollo and wispers into his ear...but kind of loudly like someone that can't hear their own speaking. "He's a southpaw. I don't want you messing with southpaws. They do everything backwards". This is exactly what his old trainer told him before he agreed to fight Rocky the first time! Apollo rubs his ear and says "Southpaw nothing. I'll drop him in three. Apollo Creed meets the Italian Stallion. Now that sounds like a darn monster movie." Total deja vu...the old memories course through his veins and he wheels himself off to his room to put on those old Red, White and Blue trunks, which are now more Pink, Eggshell White and Denim Blue. While Apollo is changing...Rocky quickly ducks out for a face lift and to search for Adrian. Drago is left mumbling to himself.

Later that evening, the nursing home serves up Rocky's favorite Turkey Pot Pie and for a while he forgets about his anger from the earlier dominos game. Apollo is enjoying his meal and his vintage briefs. All seems well until...in the background...the CNN commercial happens again. Rocky calls for Adrian and that triggers both he and Apollo's memory. Drago can be found trying to work the door knob to the dining room...mumbling. {Rocky theme music kicks in again and slowly increases in volume} Rocky tells Apollo that "a cheater should never wear Pink, Eggshell White and Denim Blue...errrr...well they used to be Red, White and Blue and that is a disgrace!" Apollo: "I am gonna give you the butt whippin that they should have let me give you 50yrs ago I-talian Stallion". Rocky rises from his wheel chair and rips the IV out from his arm. Like a schizophrenic he suddenly slips into the Rambo character... The dinning room door opens and Drago stumbles in..."Destroy...Destroy". RockyRambo takes the IV bottle and smashes it ontop of Drago's head, instantly killing him. He turns back toward the camera...Apollo...and says: " I could have killed 'em all, I could kill you. In town you're the law, out here it's me. Don't push it. Don't push it or I'll give you a war you won't believe. Let it go. Let it go." Apollo tells RockyRambo to "Bring it on...I got a handful of hurt'n here for ya Stallion". RockyRambo starts to rip his shirt off, but cant pop the first button. Several minutes pass as RockyRambo takes off his shirt. Periodically, Apollo forgets why he is mad...but the theme music starts to grate on his nerves and he remembers. RockyRambo strikes the fighters pose and lunges for Apollo. The IV fluids from the attack on Drago were spread over the floor and RockyRambo slips and falls...hitting his head against the corner of the table. As he falls to the ground...you can hear his last call....AAAAAAdrian. RockyRambo is gone. Apollo starts to breath easier as he sits back down and eats his Turkey Pot Pie. Immediately, Apollo and Don King begin plans for a Super Senior Boxing Circuit, but the plans are cut short when Apollo dies from e-coli he got from bad carrots in the pie.

This is how it should end...at least it would be fun!

Followed by Rocky VIII, where Rocky has died of cancer. Well not from cancer persay, he had cancer but then he tried to heal himself with gunpowder like he did in Rambo III... and I won't go further because it gets messy.
The movie starts off during his funeral attended by all the residents of Philadelphia, Russia, and Las Vegas. At the end of the funeral the view is brought to hell where Rocky is currently arriving. The devil picks a fight with Rocky upon his arrival, and they decide to settle it in the ring. After 26,000 rounds, Rocky finally knocks the devil out winning the residents of hell over in the process. I suppose the devil gives Rocky a fiddle made of gold or something, maybe boxing gloves made of gold. Anyway, after defeating the devil on his hometurf Rocky only has one more challenge left. He needs to train hard for his ultimate goal of punching out God.
It's perfect, it even allows for a (yet another) sequel!

I saw this film today because it was doubled with another film that I wanted my son to see. It starts very slow and largely centers around a man living in the past. I thought Sylvester looked bloated around his face as though he was constantly in a fight, but I guess that is from age or roids in the past? By the end of the movie the swelling or at least the appearance of it had gone down - did anyone else catch that?

If you are expecting this movie to be like the past Rocky films with Mr.T and the Russian then you will be disappointed. If you take this movie as a drama then it is not bad. If you are a depressed person or an emotional person this film may invigorate you, especially if you are just looking to make the world a better place, but it is just not going your way.

As with other Rocky movies this one takes on the typical shape where he needs to fight and does so after many scenes or eating up himself and others around him. New to this movie is the addition of his son, who now grown up, brings a different perspective to Rocky that we have not seen before. If you are a Rocky fan you will like this, if you are not into boxing or Rocky then you may see it like a good Soap, and nothing else.

I'm a huge Rocky fan, but I have been leary about being sucked in by this one. However, I will have to go see it because I can't miss rocky, even the geriatric version. However, it has gotten good reviews and my co-workers who have seen it like it allot. Its just that its getting more and more unbelievable as he gets older. And Vinc, there had better not be a seventh Rocky!

Well, remember there was the introduction of the son so maybe they will start calling it "Balboa" and start from I, then II, etc. wink.gif If you are a die hard Rocky fan then as I said you will like it. Keep in mind that it is mostly drama.

Too funny Vincenzo, I"ve used a similar scenario for the same effect but now we"ve been forced down the rabbit hole with Rocky to the after life but not so fast. The seg-way to his death is that his DNA is kept and then replicated. That's right Rocky fights one cell at a time to the recreation of himself. Norse Sagas pale in comparison to this, the greatest epic blockbuster to grace the screens of modern microbiology.

What essentially made Rocky an American classic is the grounded realism that connects the character to the audience and the fatalistic complexity of knowing just who he is. Why mess with success?
