She was already on watch for being in poor health, this type of stress problem is just progressing her health issues. They spent their career trying to break the hold of the nationalist party in their country but it looks like they have either shot themselves in the foot or come up against people that won't lie down for them. Either way, it makes this trial more interest and possibly have more impact to the people of Taiwan.

Taiwan Politics History & Civil Business Politics

Taiwan's first family has had some pretty "bad" luck, if you would want to call it that. The first lady has been wheelchair bound since a truck "accident":

QUOTE
In October 1985, Mr. Chen entered the race for county magistrate in Tainan, his home county in southern Taiwan. Although he ran a strong race in the election campaign, he lost by a slim margin. Two days after his defeat, on 18 November 1985, they returned to Tainan to thank people for their support. During a stop near Kuan Miao Temple, she was hit by a farm truck in a politically-motivated "accident." The driver backed up to run over her two more times, shattering her spinal cord. He was briefly arrested, but the Kuomintang authorities never charged him. Shu-chen was left paralyzed from the waist down after, and would never walk again..

How is that for justice KMT style? And if you didn't think that was enough, her husband has had at least one assassination attempt. This attempt was just before the presidential voting and pretty much sealed the victory for him after the country took their vengence out on the other party.

Taiwanese politics is not for the faint of heart as I have seen lots of video of the parliment breaking out into a fist fight.

One of the things that they like to ask foreigners over here is what do you think about the politics. This is a trick question and if you are here...DONT ANSWER IT! Just tell them that you haven't had a chance to study the politics, so you don't have a answer yet. The only time I would answer that question is if I new what side the person asking it was on! And I like talking politics!

Yes, the amount of money former president Chen is accused of taking is about 10 million USD. His wife is accused of scamming about 4 million USD herself and his son-in-law are in trouble as well. I can tell you from hearing about it everyday on the news that they are going to nail him and in all likelihood, former presiden Chen will be in jail for the remainder of his life. His wife is wheelchair bound and she and the son-in-lwa have been requested by the prosecution to get severe punishments.

He ran under a promise to reduce corruption, so this is going to really hurt the DPP. Several of his former cabinet ministers are also under charges, but they are rolling over on Chen and pretty much guaranteeing a victory for the prosecution.

Chen was on a hungerstrike that lasted 16 days until his family and friends convinced him to eat.

Personally, I think that President Ma should let things run their course and let them convict Chen and strip the family of the money. President Ma should then reduce the former president's sentence and let him live in shame. I just think having Chen kill himself in jail on a grand stage would just look bad for Taiwan.

The hunger strike is to protest that he did NOT take the money or to say I rather die than rot in prison?
