Now that is a simple yet very scary result from a test. Cell phones... It is going to be interesting to see how far away we will have to be with cell towers and phones not to disturb the bees. The implications for this are pretty great for farming areas and telecommunications.

I just wonder how any of them will survive in the california region.

Manitoba is very sparsely populated so the previous headline is not too shocking if the cell phone theory holds. Most of the countries reporting the problems are higher populated areas with a higher degree of technology.

Scientist had better be coming up with something fast, because the life span of the bee isn't too long and when they are gone then the crops will not survive. they say that the micro-waves seem to make the bees not stick around so they had better either have the hive placed in a lot less populated ares or change the frequency of the phones. or just outlaw the cell phones all together. After all you can do without a cell phone but not without food.

Bees Abandon Young

"The bees were gone," David Hackenberg says. "The honey was still there. There's young brood (eggs) still in the hive. Bees just don't do that."

This was an interesting quote from the article:

QUOTE
But colony collapse disorder differs from past outbreaks:

"¢Instead of dying in place, the bees abandon the hives, leaving behind the queen and young bees.

"¢Remaining bees eat sparsely and suffer the symptoms - high levels of bacteria, viruses and fungi in the guts - seen by Hackenberg.

"¢Collapses can occur within two days, Hackett says.

"¢Parasites wait unusually long to invade abandoned hives.

Really puzzling to me (not that I'm any kind of expert on bees) that the behavior is so odd, not simply a disease but completely against instinctual behavior.

And here's a happy thought:
QUOTE
"Basically, everything fun and nutritious on your table - fruits, nuts, berries, everything but the grains - require bee pollinators," Hackett says. ...  "Creating healthier bees, with a good diet, better able to fight disease is the best thing we can do right now," Hackett says. Otherwise, "when you sit down to dinner, the question will be what sort of grain do you want - corn or wheat or rice - because that's about all the choice we'll have left."

Rather off topic, but...
I'm surprised no one has blamed it on global warming yet laugh.gif

Looks like the western honey bees have a case of the asian flu according to reports out of Madrid...

The BEST part, if this is correct, is the cost to eliminate the parasite. Only $1.4 per bee hive 2 times per year!

I have been thinking that micro-waves from cell phone is causing them to loose their sense of where home is as well as making them fly to other unknown parts to perhaps die or not want to start another hive.
