Garments In Perfect Report

Rather personal, but we are in the Mature LDS Board. What state do you allow your garments to reach before getting some more? See the poll.

This is such a hard one. I know I have wanted to replace them long before it gets done usually. I couldn't even go with the idea of them losing brilliance as we have a lot of iron in our water (well) and it strips most everything and makes it dull. It is my goal though to maybe have a set time, like 3 or 4 times per year to order. We always try to save a "temple pair" as well for only use at the temple.

This was a hard one to answer, I really had to think about it. As AlaskanLDS said, our water has a lot of iron in it and whites quickly begin to fade even with water softener additives. As for shrinkage, I have never had a problem with that issue. It is not so easy to replace our garments as it is in places that have distribution centers close by. We have to order online and get them through the mail. However, when they begin to show signs of wear I do retire them. I usually order new a couple times a year and whenever we are in Utah we make sure to pick up a supply to have on hand.

I do make sure they are never just thrown on the floor. Something the matron discussed when we first went through the temple. I always treat them with respect and feel honored to be worthy to wear them.

Is it really an issue? I have to admit to mending my garments to make them last longer. I don't believe in waste, and a little hole or two is hardly excuse to discard them! Also, when I inadvertently bought the wrong size, I admit to tailoring them to fit properly -- being excruciatingly careful not to impair their significance in any way. They aren't what I would consider "cheap," and so I feel compelled to get every ounce of wear out of them that I can.

Occasionally, I have purchased garments that already had holes in them. Easily repaired, no need to return them or fuss about it.

I also keep a "temple set" in proper order -- simply because we remove all of our "worldly" clothing when we attend the temple, and for me that includes my garments that are worn out in the world.

I also keep some of the most worn out and mended ones specifically for yard work, exercising, housework, and other sweaty/dirty pursuits - just as I do for old t-shirts and jeans and tennies. I have some that are going on five years old!

Farseer, I used to do that (mending garments) when I just got married until a close relative of mine who is a Temple worker saw me doing that and she almost fainted stating you cannot mend garments in any way, shape or form or make changes to it to make it fit.

I wonder what is the OFFICIAL position.

I don't know that anyone has told me not to mend them. I remember being told to treat them respectfully, and I do that, and how to properly dispose of them. I asked a sister missionary before I altered the ones I purchased that were too large and she said to just be very careful of certain items that have specific placement. Who would we ask to get the OFFICIAL position on it? Stake president? Temple president? Write to Salt Lake?

I would say the Temple Matron should know or the Temple Presidency. There is a handbook for Temple Presidents that should have the official word.

It has been my experience that different temples interpret the same instruction differently. I can give specific examples from my personal experience. Personally, I wear mine down to the last thread. Old Mormon Adage: "Use it up. Wear it out. Make it do, or do without."
