A $6.4 billion plan to extend unemployment insurance benefits to eligible workers for another three months cleared a key procedural hurdle in the Senate on Tuesday. Sixty senators voted to move ahead with debate on the measure, meeting the required number of votes for the bill to advance.

The bill is a top priority for Democrats. But most Republicans object to the measure, with many arguing that it needs to be offset with spending cuts elsewhere in the federal budget.

The bill's fate remains uncertain in the Democratic-controlled Senate, and particularly in the GOP-controlled House of Representatives. Ref. CNN

Correction: A bipartisan group of senators has reached a deal to extend federal long-term unemployment benefits for five months.

Five Republicans have signed on to the measure, effectively meaning it should clear the Senate.

A vote is not expected until after next week's recess; prospects for passage in the House are uncertain.

The recession-era program that extended jobless benefits for millions of Americans expired at the end of last year. Previous efforts to renew it, even for a short period of time, have fallen short.

A previous breaking news alert incorrectly reported the length of the extension. We regret the error. Ref. CNN
