As an addendum to this article - Ubar also paid the hacker's $100,000 to keep quiet about it. Gotta love tried and true blackmail/extortion! Source 8f.
An Uber self-driving car struck and killed a pedestrian in Arizona; Uber says it has suspended testing autonomous vehicles in all U.S. Cities. An Uber self-driving car hit and killed a woman in Tempe, Ariz., Sunday night. The Uber car was in self-driving mode when the accident occurred, according to police, but had a safety driver at the wheel as is the norm when testing autonomous vehicles. Ref. USAToday.
I think again this was human error with a person trying to cross a busy road away from a cross walk. Maybe they were playing Dodge ball. The speed zone is 40 in that section and the driverless cars can not react fast enough nor stop on a dime when a person suddenly walks out in front of it. I have a feeling this investigation will prove that no normal person would have been able to avoid the accident let alone a quicker to react self driving car. Jaywalking is illegal in most cities for this reason. A human too lazy to walk a couple hundred feet to a crosswalk makes the driverless cars look bad.
Arizona halts Uber self-driving car tests after fatal crash. Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey said in a letter to Uber's CEO that he was suspending tests on Arizona roads following the March 18 accident, which killed a pedestrian and raised questions over whether the technology was too new for testing on the public.
