Sand vs Steel In Ballistic Tests

Sand absorbs high-speed ballistic impact better than steel

Scientists have found that when a projectile is fired at a sand block at high speed, it absorbs more than 85 per cent of the energy exerted against it. This ability to resist the impact increases with the speed of the projectile, even at high velocities. Ref. Source 8u.

85% is a lot I can see the application of this in making better bunkers but I don't know how much value it will have as a replacement for steel.

Its more about application for me than what it can do on its own. In other words its nice that it can stop penetration how can same material be applied to a vehicle or a vest and still give you the 85%.
