Children can 'catch' social bias through non-verbal signals expressed by adults

Preschool-age children can learn bias through nonverbal signals displayed by adults and are likely to generalize that learned bias to other people, research shows. The findings point to a mechanism for the creation of racial bias and other biases in society. Ref. Source 7m.

Racism can be learned in many places,at home, at school, in the media and the news.

Bias To Learn Children How

Teaching kids to treat everyone as a individual who is capable to anything in life just like them is one of the hardest things to do. I think I did a very good job of it as my grown children are more open to talk to or have friendships with most anyone. I know it is very hard to do this when you are in competition with their friends, schooling and the media. I just hope that my children continue to give others a chance.

Bias To Learn Children How

So, as humans I think we react differently to people who are different. I think this is hard wired in many of us. This could lead to racism and is probably how it originally evolved, as a way for one like group to control a different group.

What adults have to do is teach our children that people are people and we are all capable of great good or not. Only through this can we eradicate racism.

Instead of thinking of them as specific individuals, they lump them into a group -- seeing them as 'those people.' Now an international team of researchers suggests one way to reduce racial bias in kids is by teaching them to identify individual faces of those of other races. Source 9c.
