Autism & Age

For the last 17 years we have lived through difficulties and challenges that were formidable. Many times I have thought that I could not bare the burden of such a weight without literally losing my mind. Thoughts of death, deep depression and many other negatives associated with being an autism parent set in. Today, many of those challenges still exist but now that my youngest is age 9 the days of time outs, restraining them to stop them from hurting themselves or others and so forth have stopped. At last, my boys can stay still long enough to learn without having a meltdown. Just the other day, for the first time in 17 years we were all able to go into a restaurant to have lunch in celebrating my middle son's birthday. I was amazed that they could all behave without fighting, rolling on the floor or screaming. The brain has wired itself into appropriate behavior after many long hours of training, teaching and most of all patience. For any autism parents that read this… it gets better with time, it may be years but if you are persistently teaching your children and not leaving them to fend for themselves because they are being difficult then you will be rewarded in the end.

Age and Autism

There were a few studies on age and autism: Long-term studies track how autism changes with ages.

international QUOTE
One of the other surprises to have emerged from longitudinal studies is the relative ease of the teen years.
