But doesn't that depend a lot of what the alien life form does? If its just them there and us here it could be like a museum piece but if they start to change or interfere with our life then that's a whole other thing.

Mass psychology has shown that human s are almost feral in large groups. If news of alien life came to light, and this alien life was intelligent, there would be whole ranges of reactions, with most of them being defensively aggressive. Individually, humans can be very open to the idea, but mobs are fearful groups.

Look out for all the religious groups that would form or try to link it to something that was prophesied in the Bible or Koran. Then there will be some that will be glad for the event because they will be looking to make some money off of it with hats, t-shirts and souvenirs.
