Yellowstone National Park - Super Volcano

I heard this on the news early this morning and it's been in the papers and on websites I think.

Scientists have said that Yellowstone National Park in the USA, which runs through many states is a massive volcano that's set to erupt! If it erupted it would produce enough lava to cover the whole of the USA. The amount of ash in the atmosphere would block out the sun and cause a natural neculear winter  undecided.gif

Here's the story on AOL:

Volcano Threatens Life on Earth

A SUPERVOLCANO simmering beneath one of the planet's areas of outstanding natural beauty has been branded a threat to mankind.

The massive explosive force lies beneath America's Yellowstone National Park - and scientists believe it is ready to erupt.

The volcano is so huge that when it does blow all life will be extinguished within a 300-mile radius, leaving vast swathes of the US devastated.

Thousands of tons of ash and sulphur dioxide will be thrown up into the atmosphere causing acid rain, blocking out sunlight and plunging the world into a bleak frozen era that will threaten all life on earth.

And scientists are warning the 'extinction-level event' is long overdue.

Professor Bill McGuire, of the Benfield Greig Hazard Research Centre, at University College, in London, said: "The Yellowstone supervolcano has been on a regular eruption cycle of 600,000 years.

"The last eruption was 640,000 years ago, so the next is long overdue."

US geologists have discovered a bulge beneath Yellowstone Lake which is 2,000 feet long and has forced the lake bed to rise by 100 feet.

Part of the park has been closed to visitors as ground temperatures have also soared - sparking fears the volcano is set to blow.

Liz Morgan, one of the geologists monitoring the site, said: "The inflated plain is a potential and serious hazard and possible precursor to a large hydrothermal explosion."

Its amazing how many doom and gloom stories have started to pop up of recent. I do not know the exact cause of world destruction, all I know is it will happen one day and we need to prepare, but the bigger questions is... is it possible to prepare for such an event?

Man there is always somthing to worry about economy, war, and now super volcanos  I don't think we can prepare, I guess we just have to have faith and hope for the best. If this was a really serious threat mabey we could make a trench leading to the grand canyon and ultimately to the ocean for the lava but I don't have any ideas for the gas and ash.

Probably not in the technical sense - unless it waits until we've colonized space; but from a religious perspective people can prepare for the end of their own lives.

I don't believe no Volcano will ever destroy the Earth. I don't want to go into the Religious thing but everything has a moment and the Creator will decide that. For years and years we have heard of volcanos, and other phenomenons destroying the Earth and stuff and we still here wink.gif

We should prepare!!!  If we don't prepare at all, what happens if we are on the "outskirts" of this event... and we survive?  How do we live if we have nothing to live off of?  To just say "oh, it's too big! we'll all die!  prepare for the end!"  is sort of ridiculous.  Prepare to LIVE after surviving the event.  Prepare to help others to LIVE.  Prepare to LEAD, if necessary.

We can't prepare for every eventuality, but we can do the best we can with what we have.  Learn how to grow and preserve your own food.  Learn how to build a fire.  Learn how to cook over that fire.  Learn how to build a temporary shelter.  Learn how to live without electricity or gas or cars or supermarkets.  It just might come in handy after this volcano erupts and wipes out massive swaths of the U.S. smile.gif

In my opinion, of course.

We should prepare!

There is a lot we can do.  IF the Yellowstone volcano were to blow, remember that what has been reported on this topic is the "Worst case" Scenario.  It is entirely possible that it would wreak terrible devastation throughout the northern Rocky Mountains, cause serious problems in the Midwest, yet leave the South, the Southwest, and the Pacific Northwest almost entirely alone.

Even people in much of Utah might not be seriously affected.

At the same time, a decent plan of emergency storage, of food and other supplies, could easily make all the difference for most people.  Even a simple 72-hour kit could make it possible for someone to get to a safer location in case of a disaster such as this.

[By The Way], when the power went out here in the Detroit area, we just cranked up our emergency radios, immediately filled everything possible with water, and lit the gas grill.  Although we have a 72 hour kit available, we didn't even have to open it up, other than to get the radios.  We did learn though that we need good insect repellent in our kit.  We wanted to sleep outside to avoid the heat, but the mosquitos were eating us up!

Preparation makes all the difference.
