Gilan the Good

I am Gilan, my father and their fathers before them bore my name. My title the good is inherited as well. While I aspire to do good, I often find that others need more encouragement, but who am I to decide for them?

I am of medium build, dark of hair, and tan of skin. I wear my hair long and unkempt to hide my forehead. My eyes are a light almost gray blue.

My most noticeable trait was imposed on me before I could walk. A small tattoo on my forehead that depicts the holy flame and marks me as its vessel. It is incomplete. Just a spark for now. I will earn my flames after proving myself a warrior of the light.

Although I feel pressure to walk in my forefathers footsteps, I often consider what aspects of life are barred from me due to my forced inclusion into the Order of the Flame.

I cannot join a trade or farm the land. I am obligated to do the work of the order.

I wear dark breeches, boots, and white shirt. A simple brown overcoat covers most and a broad straw hat keeps me in the shade.

I also must earn the orders vestments and armor.

I hide my mark because some might recognize it and seek to do me harm. Further, the past deeds of the order could impede my goals. The order is always right by its own estimation, but there are plenty who disagree.

My training as a paladin of the light lends itself well to force. But, my mastery of the light itself is still lacking and only manifests itself during great passion or duress.

I plan to seek out other bringers of the flame to learn and to ingratiate myself in the order. With my name, leadership will eventually be expected of me.

Once achieved, I will change the order. I will bring it out of hiding and truly make it an order of good.

Perhaps others will see it as an example and cease the endless violence. Or, we will become a force powerful enough to impose peace whether it is welcome or not.

Maybe I should decide what is best for others? Or would that make me just as evil as those who commit it?

Good Gilan

Advisor Description

I knew it wouldn't be long before the order sought me out. They weren't exactly subtle about it.

I had been washing down a delicious meal at the tavern with a dark beer when I lowered the flagon and saw him standing there with a hard expression on his face. It read disappointment.

The flame tattoo on his forehead gave him away immediately as a paladin of the order. Whats more, the iconography suggested that he had been involved in many a dangerous exploit.

His face is scarred and ugly, his head shaven, his nose crooked. Yet in his eyes a certain level of peace and ease.

As he approaches, I hear the rattle of mail beneath his cloak and the steal head of a mace protrudes out as he sits across from me.

He stares for a good minute and opens his mouth. Several teeth are gone, presumably knocked out.

May the flame burn within ye he says in voice like rocks rolling across pavement.

And twice as bright in you I reply.

Have ye forgotten the sting of the flame novice? Or shall I remind ye?

And twice as bright in you Master Commander

I am Master Commander Osgard. I trust you know that sir is acceptable for most common use. Ill be advising you. With some help from the light, I might even make thee into a knight. Or you will die in that pursuit.

Having been interrupted during my meal, and reprimanded, I replied slightly annoyed And where does the light command us today?

There was no warning this time. I felt an explosion of pain on my right temple and then another on my left check as my face met the hard wood of the table. I didnt know for sure, but it felt like he was wearing a gauntlet made of lead.

Several other tavern goers stopped what they were doing and watched to see what was about to happen.

Sir I whispered through the stinging pain and loud ringing in my ear.

The spell broken, the tavern goers return to their meat and ale.

Thats the trick of it squire. Come along. We have much to do

As I hauled my bruised head up from the table and felt the trickle of blood on my right side, I knew that I would vividly remember the sting of the flame before long.
