Nicholas the Alchemist

These are the writings of Nicholas Fell, son of Anthony and Mariah. I am known as the Alchemist for my early skill in the art, although my interests have since turned to artificery.

My mother claims the gift of Foresight, and has pronounced that I shall one day be a Ruler of Kings. If her sight is true remains to be seen - the command of men seems a distant prospect. My father was a commander. Those who knew him still speak of his size, his skill with the sword, and his easy way with people. I confess I have none of these qualities. I have not even matched his height, standing only at 5'11.

Still, I have much from my mother. Her pale blonde hair and bright blue eyes. Her clever fingers and restless mind. This is not such a terrible thing for an aspiring arcane engineer.

So for now I seek only to master myself and my dominion over the forces of nature and magick. This, and a few true friends, a place in which I may be of use, and I shall be content with my lot. Nevertheless the world is full of strangeness and I sense that I will walk interesting paths in this life.

Advisor Description

I received your summons.

So this was Antons son. Garrett couldnt see much of the man in him. Hed heard about the mother a pale, floaty thing. Fae-touched, the whispers said. If the boy took after her he could believe it. A bit too calm for a lad standing in a guardsmans office with a limp and a split lip. Something unsettling about those eyes. He sounded older than expected.

Yes. Your uncle Marcus sent word. Asked me to look out for you. I knew your father, back in the day. I owe him much, Garrett replied by way of explanation. I heard about your run-in with Bron ORourkes enforcers. Why didnt you come to the guard?

The Fell boy smiled wryly. I didnt know I had a friend. He eyed Garret warily and shrugged. I did nothing wrong. Maybe took a job from the wrong man. I repaired a ring for him and he accused me of thieving the gold shavings. Im not so foolish as to cross one such as he, but what could I prove? And not to suggest corruption amongst your men, but where I come from some take coin to look the other way. I couldnt take the chance.

Garrett nodded slowly. I see. He ran a callused hand though his thatch of dark hair. Well, not much I can do about it now. But Ill vouch for you and Ill vouch for my men. Dont stay away if trouble returns. You need coin?

No. Jewellings paid well enough. But there are other ways I would rather spend my time.

Alchemy? Marcus said you had some skill. If I hear of any work I could point you in the right direction.

Perhaps. For a moment the boy looked relieved, closer to his 16 years, then he composed himself again. This is unexpected. I thank you for your counsel ser. I should not like to take too much of your time, but I shall speak to you if I have need.

Not very trusting, but he seemed a decent enough lad, Garrett reflected after Nicholas had left. Remarkedly… grounded for one who'd had his ears filled with crazy talk of being a ruler of kings. He didn't know how much he could actually help him - he was a soldier and by all accounts the kid was a scholar - but perhaps he could show him a part of the world that a boy without a father wouldn't have seen. He owed Anton that much.
