Why did Ireland remain as a neutral state during the second world war?

Mostly to stay out of trouble; historically before WW2 the Germans haven't pulled out any aggressive move on Ireland and the republic was only young when the war began. When countries like this remains a neutral position they basically desire to be as less noticeable as possible.
