President Barack Obama said that the United States would remain the world's "Indispensable" power and that President-elect Donald Trump had told him he was committed to NATO.

"In my conversations with the President-elect, he expressed a great interest in maintaining our core strategic relationships," Obama said, adding that he had a message from Trump to pass on to world leaders he will meet this week.

"There is no weakening of resolve when it comes to maintaining a strong and robust NATO relationship," Obama said.

Obama took questions from reporters before leaving on the final scheduled international trip of his presidency -- to Greece, Germany and Peru. Watch CNN coverage.

On Republicans’ election victories, Obama said the Democratic Party has “better ideas” but that “good ideas don’t matter if people don’t hear them.”

"I think it's a healthy thing for the Democratic Party to go through some reflection,” Obama said.

He encouraged Trump to reach out to women and minorities who were concerned about the tenor of the campaign. Ref. USAToday.

President Barack Obama says that Donald Trump tapped into a troubling strain of rhetoric playing on Americans' fears of globalization to win the presidency.

Speaking in Athens, Greece, Obama said he recognized an "Anger and fear in the American population" over threats of mechanization and globalization, but that Republican officials didn't use facts when making their case about the US economy.

"You've seen some of the rhetoric among Republican elected officials and activists and media. Some of it pretty troubling and not necessarily connected to facts, but being used effectively to mobilize people," Obama said at a news conference. "And obviously President-elect Trump tapped into that particular strain within the Republican Party and then was able to broaden that enough and get enough votes to win the election." Ref. CNN.

President Obama, making a final return as a head of state to Berlin, issued a warning to President-elect Donald Trump in his dealings with Russia.

He cautioned that on issues like Ukraine and Syria, Moscow must be confronted head-on. He advised Trump against making deals with Russian President Vladimir Putin that could hurt Americans.

"I don't expect the President-elect will follow exactly our blueprint or our approach, but my hope is he does not simply take a realpolitik approach and suggest we cut some deals with Russia, even if it hurts people or violates international norms or leaves smaller countries vulnerable," he said. Pres. Barack Obama's Move - Page 85

President Barack Obama reaffirmed his counterterrorism strategy in his final national security speech today, issuing a tacit warning to his successor that reversing course could result in dire consequences.

Cautioning against using torture to obtain information and making another pitch for closing the naval prison at Guantanamo Bay, Obama argued against the very promises Donald Trump made during his run for president. Obama warned that returning to those practices would ultimately damage US national security.

"Adhering to the rule of law is not a weakness in the long term, it is our greatest strength," Obama said during an address at MacDill Air Force Base, the Florida headquarters of US Central Command and Special Operations Command. "The whole objective of these terrorists is to scare us into changing the nature of who we are and our democracy. And the fact is, people and nations do not make good decisions when they are driven by fear." Ref. CNN.

He claimed that terrorists were not able to make an attack on US soil, maybe he was talking about a major attack because there have been lone wolves and couples that have been shooting up people. I also quiver with these kinds of announcements because it becomes like a dare for terrorists to try harder.
