Alternation of old beliefs
Consider the following quote and place your thoughts:
"The path of least resistance and least trouble is a mental rut already made. It requires troublesome work to undertake the alternation of old beliefs. Self-conceit often regards it as a sign of weakness to admit that a belief to which we have once committed ourselves is wrong. We get so identified with an idea that it is literally a "pet" notion and we rise to its defense and stop our eyes and ears to anything different"
-- John Dewey, Information Clearing House
This may be true of people with more narrow mindset than I. In my experience it's been quite easy to change my beliefs. However, I am a teenager, so I suppose that plays an adequate role in how much my beliefs change. When I come across something I'm initially uncomfortable with, I try my best to grasp the concept and accept it as a valid viewpoint. There are many others who, when one attempts to introduce a new concept, they throw back their head and shake and try their utmost to buck it off. These people, in my opinion, are people who have submitted their lives to one particular system, and refuse to believe certain things because, if they did, their system, and therefore everything else they had been striving for for their entire life, would be destroyed.
