The personal data of an estimated 18 million current, former and prospective federal employees were affected by a cyberbreach at the Office of Personnel Management -- more than four times the 4.2 million the agency has publicly acknowledged, according to U.S. Officials briefed on the investigation. The number is expected to grow.

FBI Director James Comey gave the 18 million estimate in a closed-door briefing to senators in recent weeks, using the Office of Personnel Management's own internal data, according to the officials. Those affected could include people who applied for government jobs but never actually ended up working for the government. Ref. CNN

A report from the Office of Personnel Management said an investigative team looking into a second hack of background investigation records "has now concluded with high confidence that sensitive information, including the Social Security Numbers (SSNs) of 21.5 million individuals, was stolen from the background investigation databases. This includes 19.7 million individuals that applied for a background investigation, and 1.8 million non-applicants, predominantly spouses or co-habitants of applicants." In June, the agency revealed the existence of a separate but related hack that affected 4.2 million current and former federal employees. Ref. USAToday

USA The Cyberattacks

I personally find the whole internet very vulnerable to attack and shut downs. The dependency on the internet for business and communication is worrisome because its probably the fist place that will be attacked if a war breaks out.
