Attorney General Jeff Sessions has asked for the resignations of 46 US attorneys, igniting anger from officials who say they were given no warning about their dismissal.
The Justice Department announced the firings on Friday afternoon, and many prosecutors had not been formally notified or even told before they were fired, according to a law enforcement source. Deputy Attorney General Dana Boente was in the beginning stages of calling each US attorney individually to tell them they had to resign when the DOJ issued the statement.
A law enforcement source charged that "This could not have been handled any worse," because there was little warning. Many prosecutors found out through media reports that they had to resign today. Ref. CNN.
Nearly 2,000 lawyers ask for Jeff Sessions to be disbarred:
Almost 2,000 attorneys from across the US have signed on to a complaint addressed to the Alabama State Bar Disciplinary Committee asking that Attorney General Jeff Session be disbarred from the Alabama State Bar. Ref. Source 4j.
Code Pink activist convicted for 'laughing' at US Attorney General Jeff Sessions:
Fairooz, let out a sound that court documents referred to as laughter when a senator said during the hearing that Sessions had a record of "Treating all Americans equally under the law". Ref. Source 2y.
So, the article headline was misleading since it said she was convicted of laughing but it was much more than that. First, she was being disruptive at a hearing in Congress. Second, when asked to leave she became more disruptive. Third, she resisted the officers sent to escort her out. We have free speech and we have the right to demonstrate, but we don't have the right to be disruptive while exercising our other rights.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions has a new directive for federal prosecutors across the country: charge suspects with the most serious offense you can prove.
Friday's announcement follows a line of several other significant departures from Obama-era domestic policies at the Justice Department, but this decision crystalized Sessions' position in the criminal justice realm.
In a brief one-and-a half page memo, Sessions outlined his new instructions for charging decisions in federal cases, saying that his new first principle is "That prosecutors should charge and pursue the most serious, readily provable offense." Ref. CNN.
Under Obama the DOJ was told to try and let people off with little or no punishment. That is how you get guys who rape girls in college get a six month deferred judgement instead of 25 years behind bars because they do not want to ruin his professional career.
